Apple may be working on a new feature with watchOS 27.2 that could make the screenshot experience on Apple Watch more controlled. Signs detected in the codes of the version reveal that a preview can be shown to the user after taking a screenshot. It will be possible to store, share or delete the image from this screen. So the current system on the Apple Watch could come closer to the screenshot interface long used on the iPhone. However, the feature is not currently available to users and there is no definitive information that it will be included in the final version of watchOS 27.2.
The feature, which is included in watchOS 27.2 by pdfu, known for its code reviews, is behind a disabled feature flag for now. Although this may indicate that Apple is actively testing the function, it is important to remember that features in development may be changed or removed completely before reaching the end user. Similarly, Apple can add new functions to the operating system codes in advance and activate them in later beta versions. Therefore, it is possible that the screenshot preview will be available in a later watchOS 27.2 beta version. However, existing code findings alone do not confirm that the feature will be released.
Apple Watch screenshot system could offer more control
Currently, when a screenshot is taken on Apple Watch, the user is not shown any confirmation or preview screen. By pressing the Digital Crown and the side button simultaneously, the created image is transferred directly to the Photos app on the paired iPhone. Although this method works quickly, just using two physical buttons at the same time can sometimes lead to unintentional screenshots being taken. In such a case, the user must then go to the Photos application on the iPhone to delete the unnecessary image. If the new preview system is introduced, it may be possible to remove accidentally taken screenshots directly from the watch.
When a screenshot is taken on the iPhone, a full-screen preview or a small preview is shown in the corner of the screen, depending on the setting used. In both methods, the user can edit, share, save or delete the image with a few taps. The resulting codes for the Apple Watch also indicate that a similar basic approach can be adapted to a smaller watch screen. Additionally, adding the sharing option directly to the preview screen can shorten the process for users who need to first transfer the screenshot to their iPhone and then send it to another application. However, due to the limited space of the watch screen, it seems more likely that Apple will use a simpler control layout rather than carrying the interface on the iPhone exactly.
The screenshot feature on Apple Watch is disabled by default. Users can activate the function directly from the Settings app on the watch or through the Apple Watch app on iPhone. The current system basically only offers the option to turn the screenshot feature on or off. If a preview interface is added, this structure can turn into a more flexible model that allows the user to make decisions after shooting. In particular, the ability to directly delete accidentally created images will be a practical change that can reduce the accumulation of unnecessary files in the Photos archive.
On the other hand, the fact that the feature is still behind a feature flag means that Apple can make changes to the interface and the way it works. The current findings do not necessarily indicate what the experience will be like in the final version of watchOS 27.2, as the company was able to enable and withdraw some functions during the beta period. Despite this, the presence of signs for preview, sharing and deletion options in the codes shows that Apple is considering taking the screenshot management on the watch beyond the current simple structure. If made available, the feature could provide a small but tangible convenience in daily use. Considering the Apple Watch’s small screen and limited physical control area, the success of the function will largely depend on how fast and simple the preview interface works.
