The feature that has been awaited for years on Instagram is in testing: Clickable links can be added to the descriptions

For many years, Instagram has had a structure that limits link sharing within the platform to certain areas. Most of the time, users could only share links in certain sections such as profile bio, Stories, or Reels. This situation posed a significant limitation, especially for content producers and brands. However, a new test that Meta is working on shows that this approach may partially change. The company has started testing a new feature that allows the use of clickable links in the description section of Instagram posts with a limited group of users.

The innovation in question was first noticed by content creator and blogger Andrea Valeria. In the screenshots she shared on Instagram, Valeria showed that she was able to add a Substack link to a post description. It was noteworthy that the link in the post was directly clickable. In addition, according to an information message within the application, it is stated that users can share a maximum of 10 links per month.

Is the link era starting for Instagram post descriptions?

In a statement to Engadget, Meta confirmed that the feature that enables link sharing in post descriptions is being tested for Meta Verified subscribers. However, no details were given about how many users the feature was offered to or whether it would be made available to a wider audience in the future. Despite this, the testing appears to be progressing to a very limited extent. For example, while the link shared by Valeria appears clickable in Instagram’s mobile application, the same post does not work the same way on the web version.

Instagram’s restrictions on link sharing have been a notable feature since the early years of the platform. The inability of users to share clickable links in post descriptions has led to the emergence of new digital tools over time. In particular, “bio link” services such as Linktree have made it possible for content producers to present multiple links on their Instagram profiles on a single page. These tools have played an important role in helping brands and content creators direct Instagram traffic to different platforms.

Although the new testing feature may make link sharing easier, the 10 link limit per month still carries certain restrictions. For this reason, link forwarding services are not expected to disappear completely in the short term. Despite this, the ability to share direct links in post descriptions can lead to changes in the way content creators interact with their followers.

On the other hand, Meta also has different attempts to associate link sharing with the paid subscription model. It is known that the company recently carried out a similar test on Facebook. Accordingly, some content producers may need to have a Meta Verified subscription in order to share links on Facebook. In addition, Meta continues to position its paid verification service as a package that offers more features to users.
