Google has started rolling out a new interface update for the Android version of its Chrome browser, targeting especially large-screen devices. This innovation, prepared for tablets and foldable smartphones, brings the bookmarks bar feature that has long been available in the desktop version of Chrome. Thus, users can access frequently visited sites faster and have a more productive web experience on mobile devices. Although it may seem like a small detail, this change aims to make the use of the browser more practical, especially on large-screen Android devices.
This feature, which started to be distributed with version 146 of the Android version of Chrome, was first noticed by 9to5Google. Thanks to the update, the browser interface on large-screen devices begins to look more like the Chrome experience on laptops and desktops. Tablet and foldable phone users have long been waiting for some productivity features on the desktop to come to the mobile browser. This new bookmarks bar can be a significant convenience, especially for users who regularly visit many sites.
How does the bookmarks bar work in the Chrome Android app?
The newly added bookmarks bar is located just below the Omnibox section, known as Chrome’s address bar. In this area, bookmarks saved by users are displayed with small site icons (favicon) and site names. Thus, it becomes possible to access your favorite websites with a single touch. Additionally, when the number of bookmarks increases, there is an arrow icon (chevron) on the right to scroll through the list. Thanks to this icon, users can access more bookmarks quickly.
In addition, the interface also includes some minor ease of use. When you long press on a bookmark, the full URL address of the relevant site can be displayed. This feature makes it easier to distinguish, especially for users who register different pages with the same domain name. On the other hand, it seems that the design is kept simple and the focus is on using the screen area as efficiently as possible.
Although the feature was released with the new version of Chrome, it is not enabled by default. Google initially set this option to be hidden on narrow screens. Therefore, users who want to use the feature must manually enable it through browser settings.
To open the bookmarks bar, it is enough to go to Settings > Appearance menu in Chrome and activate the “Show bookmarks bar” option there. After this step, the bar becomes visible on tablets and foldable phones with the appropriate screen size.
