It was stated that during the court process, Judge Lin pointed out that the decision in question could seriously disrupt Anthropic’s activities. In addition, Lin assessed that the steps taken by the government may conflict with the company’s freedom of expression rights. Despite this, the final decision has not been made yet; However, the preliminary injunction decision seems to be capable of directly affecting the course of the process.

Background to the dispute between Pentagon and Anthropic

Tensions between the parties began last month with a usage policy dispute between the US Department of Defense and Anthropic. It is known that the company wants to limit the use of the artificial intelligence models it has developed in certain areas. In this context, rules have been put forward to prohibit their use in areas such as autonomous weapon systems and large-scale surveillance applications. However, government officials did not accept these limitations and described the company as a “supply chain risk”.

The label in question is generally used for foreign companies or actors who are considered to pose a threat to national security. Despite this, the application of the same classification to a US-based artificial intelligence company caused wide repercussions in the technology sector. However, then-President Donald Trump instructed federal agencies to terminate business relations with Anthropic.

Following these developments, Anthropic filed a lawsuit against both relevant government institutions and Ministry of Defense officials. The company’s CEO, Dario Amodei, described the government’s steps as “punitive and retaliatory.” On the other hand, the White House criticized the company harshly, describing it as a structure that “risks national security.”

In the statement made by Anthropic after the court decision, it was stated that they were pleased with the rapid action of the judiciary. The company emphasized that the lawsuit was necessary to protect both its own rights and the interests of its customers and business partners. In addition, it was stated that instead of completely cutting off cooperation with public institutions, it is aimed to find a common ground for the safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence.
