Electricity production from solar and wind in Türkiye broke a monthly record with a total of 9.9 billion kilowatt-hours in August. While the share of solar energy in electricity production is increasing, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources announced the monthly share of renewable resources for Türkiye as 56.4 percent. This rate corresponds to a total production of 20.7 billion kilowatt-hours.
According to the Ministry’s statement dated October 6, total electricity production in August was 36.71 billion kilowatt-hours. Solar power plants took a 14.1 percent share with a production of 5.16 billion kilowatt-hours. In addition, wind power plants produced 4.74 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, accounting for 12.9 percent of the monthly total.
Hydroelectric power plants produced 9.08 billion kilowatt-hours and had the largest share with 24.7 percent. On the other hand, production from domestic sources reached 69.7 percent of the August total. The Ministry reports this amount as 25.58 billion kilowatt-hours.
The share of renewable resources and the share of domestic resources do not represent the same classification. The domestic production rate reflects the broader total of resources being sourced from within the country. For this reason, it would not be correct to derive a new production share by adding the values of 56.4 percent and 69.7 percent together.
Türkiye’s renewable generation share in the first eight months reached 60.3 percent
The Ministry announces that 149.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity were produced from renewable sources in the January-August period. This amount constitutes 60.3 percent of the eight-month total. In addition, in the same period, domestic resources provided 73.2 percent of the total production with 181.8 billion kilowatt-hours.
In the first eight months, hydroelectric production reached 75.2 billion, wind production 30.4 billion and solar production 29.8 billion kilowatt-hours. The Ministry defines these values as the highest levels for the same periods since 2000.
Installed power data at the end of August shows a different measurement. Türkiye’s total electricity production capacity is 126 thousand 944 megawatts; The capacity of renewable resources was 79 thousand 902 megawatts. Thus, the share of renewable energy in installed capacity increased to 62.9 percent.
In addition, the installed power of solar power plants reached 27 thousand 914 and the installed power of wind power plants reached 15 thousand 434 megawatts. The total capacity of the two resources reached 43 thousand 348 megawatts and took a 34.2 percent share in the total installed power.
Installed power refers to the production capacity of power plants; Production in kilowatt-hours describes the amount of electricity they provide in a certain period. Therefore, the 34.2 percent capacity share and the 27 percent solar-wind share in August production compare different indicators. The announced data also reveals monthly production and eight-month accumulation separately.
