Snap decided to reintroduce 2D Bitmojis in line with the intense demands after moving all Bitmoji avatars to 3D format in 2023. Thanks to this new option called Comic Bitmoji, users will be able to see all Bitmoji avatars in the application in 2D. The feature is expected to be available to Snapchat+ users in the coming days.
When the Comic Bitmoji feature is enabled, not only the user’s own avatar but also the avatars of their friends will be displayed in 2D. In this way, the nostalgic atmosphere of the classic Bitmoji style returns to the application. Snap states that this new feature preserves the 2D aesthetics while also incorporating the advantages of the existing 3D infrastructure. Users will also have the opportunity to send stickers stylized with this new look to their friends.

Snapchat abandoned 2D avatars and switched to the 3D Bitmoji system in 2023. With this transition, a wider range of customization was offered in body type, hairstyle and makeup options. However, despite these developments, many users demanded the return of 2D avatars with a simpler and iconic appearance. While approximately 100 thousand people supported a campaign launched on Change.org, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel was among those who signed the campaign by supporting this wish.
Despite this, it is noteworthy that the Comic Bitmoji feature is only available to Snapchat+ subscribers. The fact that the feature is not accessible to free users may cause dissatisfaction in some segments. However, this decision is also considered as a strategic move to increase Snapchat+ subscriptions.
According to Snap’s statement with Fast Company, Comic Bitmoji works with a filter logic applied directly on 3D avatars. To obtain a 2D view, the team; He made technical adjustments to proportions, shading and outlines. These optimizations made for animations and facial expressions to work smoothly in the new format, making the experience more natural. Snap emphasizes that more than 320 million users worldwide use Bitmoji every day, stating that such details are critical for user satisfaction.
