Share of entry-level technical hires at Anthropic drops to 9 percent

Anthropic announced that its recruitment structure has changed in its October 16 research on its own employees and the use of artificial intelligence. While the share of entry-level employees in the technical staff of the rapidly growing company decreased, the number of technical employees continued to increase in absolute terms. This distinction is important in order not to read the rates in the report as mass layoff data.

According to the research, since the beginning of 2025, the share of entry-level employees in technical departments has decreased from 21 percent to 14 percent. The proportion of the same group among new technical recruits is from 27 percent to 9 percent declined. The company evaluated its findings through 17 employee interviews along with internal employment and usage data.

The share of technical departments in total employment also decreased from 61 percent to 56 percent. However, the company increased the number of technical hires during this period. The rate has come down because other functions, such as sales, finance and recruiting, have grown faster. Therefore, the decrease in the share does not alone mean that the number of engineers has decreased.

In addition, the report observes an increase in the work production of employees using artificial intelligence tools. However, the process of adopting tools does not proceed randomly. Employees who are preparing for a larger project can also turn to these tools earlier. Therefore, the study does not confirm that all observed differences are due to the use of Claude alone.

Anthropic says tech headcount continues to grow

Anthropic monitors usage outside the company in Economic Index research. The framework, published in January, considers task complexity, skill level, intended use, autonomy of artificial intelligence and success with separate measures. In this evaluation, the company uses the use of its own API service with Claude.ai conversations.

The January report of this index includes examples from the meetings in November 2025. It separates different purposes such as business, education and personal use and does not settle for a single usage rate. Therefore, this index does not examine the same sample as the internal employee survey in October. In one, Anthropic’s squad structure stands out, and in the other, Claude’s use in different tasks stands out.

The current employee report also makes clear that the process of adopting tools is not random. Although researchers compare the same people’s outcomes over time, the jobs employees undertake and the growth of the company can affect the results. This limitation distinguishes the change in entry-level hiring rate from a result that would apply directly to all occupations.

The company explains that it is growing its sales, finance and recruitment teams faster while increasing the number of technical employees. In addition, the report also addresses the transition of employees to different positions within the organization as jobs change. The data shows staffing composition at a growing AI company and does not calculate an unemployment rate for the entire labor market.
