Samsung has been working on a new VR (virtual reality) headset for a while now. The Samsung-branded device that was spotted on Geekbench’s database and is seen carrying 16 GB of RAM is believed to be this headset.
The device is believed to be a VR headset and not an upcoming smartphone because while most, if not all, smartphone chips used today are equipped with a total of 8 cores, the test result reveals that the device is running on a 6-core SoC. Interestingly, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip that is expected to be at the heart of Samsung’s upcoming VR headset also comes with a 4+2 CPU stack.
The Geekbench benchmark also reveals that the device is running at a base frequency of 2.36GHz, which is close to the chipset’s 2.4GHz clock speed. The model number in the Geekbench database further suggests that this is indeed a VR headset that Samsung is working on. Previously, tipster Ronald Quandt had stated that this model number represented Samsung’s VR headset.
Samsung to offer VR headset with Android XR platform
While these are just rumors, a Samsung device with a hexa-core chipset makes it highly likely that this will be the company’s upcoming VR headset. The Geekbench listing also reveals that the device runs on Android 14. While not much is known about the headset yet, a report from last month speculated that it could run Android. Samsung’s VR headsets have previously been tipped to run on Android XR.
