Samsung’s foldable phone series, Galaxy Z Fold, has been remarkably stagnant in terms of battery capacity for a long time. Since the Galaxy Z Fold3 model introduced in 2021, a 4,400 mAh battery capacity has been used in the series. In fact, the fact that the 2020 Galaxy Z Fold 2, which is an older model, has a 4,500 mAh battery, reveals that there has been no significant progress on the capacity side in recent years. Despite this, the fact that Chinese manufacturers offer much higher capacity batteries in their foldable phones causes criticism that Samsung is left behind in this field.
A recent leak shows that Samsung is preparing to partially change this situation. Allegedly, a higher capacity battery will be used in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 model, which is expected to be introduced in 2026. However, it is stated that the increase may remain quite limited. Despite this, the battery capacity of the new model is expected to reach approximately 5,000 mAh. This value corresponds to the same level of capacity used in the company’s flagship model, the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Wide Fold battery details revealed
According to the leak, Galaxy Z Fold 8 will continue the dual battery design as in previous foldable models. It is stated that due to the structure of foldable phones, the capacity of the batteries positioned in two separate parts of the device will be 2,369 mAh and 2,485 mAh, respectively. The total nominal capacity of these two cells is 4,854 mAh. Despite this, due to the marketing approach of the manufacturers, the “typical capacity” of the device is expected to be announced as 5,000 mAh.
Although this value does not seem very high by today’s standards, it means an increase of approximately 14 percent for the Galaxy Z Fold series. In addition, it is stated that a more significant improvement in real usage time can be achieved thanks to Samsung’s software optimizations and the energy efficiency of new generation processors. Despite this, the fact that Chinese manufacturers offer batteries of 5,500 mAh and above in some foldable models shows that the competition is still quite strong.
On the other hand, the leaks do not only mention the Galaxy Z Fold 8. It is stated that a new model that is said to be introduced in the same period is also on the agenda. It is claimed that this device, called “Wide Fold”, will have a wider cover screen design. It is stated that this approach may correspond to a form factor similar to the foldable iPhone model that Apple is allegedly working on.
It is said that the battery capacity of the Wide Fold model will be approximately 4,900 mAh. This value offers a capacity very close to the Galaxy Z Fold 8. In addition, the screen ratio and body design of the device are expected to differ. It is also stated in industry sources that Samsung is working on some design changes specifically to improve multitasking performance and widescreen experience.
Samsung usually introduces the new generations of the Galaxy Z Fold series in the summer. Therefore, if the current leaks are true, it seems likely that both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Wide Fold models will be officially announced around July.
