Samsung Galaxy Watch gets approval for sleep apnea feature

Samsung recently received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the sleep apnea feature in its Health Monitor app. This means that symptoms of sleep apnea can be detected when using a compatible Galaxy Watch and Samsung phone combination in the US.

So which Galaxy Watch will this feature come to? It is not possible to answer this question because details are not mentioned in Samsung’s press release. However, the first option that comes to mind is, naturally, the Galaxy Watch 6 series. It is worth noting that in South Korea, this feature is available on both the Galaxy Watch 6 series and the Galaxy Watch 5 series. The company received the necessary approval for this last fall.

The sleep apnea feature will most likely be available in the third quarter of this year. This feature makes it possible to detect signs of moderate to severe disabling sleep apnea over a two-night monitoring period. To benefit from this feature, it is necessary to track sleeps longer than four hours twice within a ten-day period. Being over the age of 22 is also considered among the requirements of the feature.

Important health problems can be prevented thanks to Samsung Galaxy Watch smart watches

Sleep apnea is a common, chronic sleep condition that often goes undiagnosed and untreated. It causes you to stop breathing while you sleep and can disrupt your oxygen supply. Therefore, it may cause a decrease in sleep quality and, as a result, daytime fatigue. Untreated sleep apnea can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, including hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, and stroke.

The US National Sleep Foundation says about 25 percent of men and 10 percent of women in the US experience this condition. This new feature of Samsung Galaxy Watch smartwatches will allow more people to easily recognize that they have this disease and, if so, to seek medical help to reduce health-related complications.
