Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus in five keys: dual camera, Intelligent Scan and the first Galaxy with 256GB

They had been filtering for a long time and we already have them here. The Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus make their appearance under the sky of Barcelona and become the biggest bet of Samsung for this first half of the year, as it is expected, as every season, that the Galaxy Note receives their corresponding generation. Virtually everything was known about the pair of new catalog leaders of Samsung, although the presentation has provided us with extra data to understand in depth the two phones. From its variable opening to its artificial intelligence, going through certain decisions in terms of assembling components or defining the design. But to try to summarize everything, we are going to cut the phones into different keys, do you accompany us?

The best screen on the market?

Samsung has been working for several years to improve the quality of its Super AMOLED panels, which it mounts on practically all its phones and now also markets part of its competition. It can be said that Samsung is to blame for the fact that the OLED is now invading the market, despite the participation of other manufacturers in the process, and its high ranges show off those with the best finish. The Galaxy Note 8, without going any further, obtained last year some outstanding notes in the DisplayMate analysis, and the panels of the Galaxy S9 this year continue on the same line. The infinite screen design is maintained the 18.5: 9 ratio is maintained, somewhat longer than the 18: 9 or 2: 1 ratio and the QHD + resolution is also maintained. That is, 2,960 x 1,440 pixels to trace the densities: 570ppp in the S9, 530ppp in the S9 Plus. All in two screens of 5.8 and 6.2 inches. Although the design looks identical, Samsung has introduced some changes in this new generation. The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus have improved the rounded shapes of the crystal, which ultimately defines the entire front of the phone, and also the grip of a phone that is no longer as slippery as in previous generations.

The best engines to win the race

As every year, Samsung is committed to mounting two different processors in its range leaders. The most international terminal enjoys its own Exynos processor, which in this case is the Exynos 9810, while the model for specific markets assembles the Qualcomm alternative. That, in this case, is the Snapdragon 845, the chip that will mount virtually all the major plane of Android during this 2018.

[bs-quote quote=”As in previous generations, Samsung is betting on Qualcomm to pair up with their Exynos but there are changes in the memories: 4GB for the S9, 6GB for the S9 Plus.” style=”style-13″ align=”center”][/bs-quote]

Those of the international market” we are in luck because so far the benchmarks of both processors have given as a winner the model with Exynos, which will arrive on board both the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9 Plus. There is no equity, however, in terms of RAM. Here we continue with the differences between both models, which are not only in size. 4GB of RAM for a Galaxy S9 as a single model, 6GB of RAM for the Galaxy S9 Plus, also with a single option. At least for now. The two brains will also have 64GB of accompaniment, and there will be a superior model of 128GB. Eye, there are developments in this aspect. The first time the Galaxy S reach 256GB of memory for the most powerful model of all. It will be seen in what areas is commercialized when the time comes, but all can be extended with a microSD that should not exceed 400GB. A powerful set looks everywhere you look.

On cameras, Samsung gets wet on the Plus

With the passage of time, cameras have become one of the most valued components of a mobile phone. Especially when we move in price ranges to which we can, and we must demand more. And here Samsung has been doing a good job for several generations, which takes us to the cameras mounted on the new Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus. It was rumored to satiety and has been fulfilled. Finally, Samsung also separates its Galaxy S9 through the camera. The simplest phone, the S9, opt for a single rear camera with variable aperture, while the S9 Plus carries the second set of dual cameras from the manufacturer’s flagships, after the Note 8 that landed last year.

[bs-quote quote=”The virtues of the double camera remain in the Galaxy S9 Plus, which will offer Live Focus and also optical zoom, although the lens with variable aperture will be shared.” style=”style-13″ align=”center”][/bs-quote]

We talk about 12 megapixels in the Galaxy S9, with Dual Pixel sensor and autofocus, with variable aperture f / 1.5-2.4 and that is capable of recording videos in super slow motion, up to 960 frames per second with motion detection. In the S9 Plus is added an extra lens, another 12 megapixels with aperture f / 2.4 and that provides optical zoom to the set, in addition to selective blur, which we can also call bokeh or Live Focus, using the Samsung brand for this type of Photographs. The double opening, present in the only sensor of the Galaxy S9 and the main one of the S9 Plus, gives us good photographs in all situations. f / 2.4 for when we have good lighting, f / 1.5 for the night. The defocus and optical zoom remain in the Plus and will be determining factors when choosing between one phone and another. If what we are looking for is blurring in the style of traditional cameras, we will have to bet on the biggest screen, and therefore for the highest price. But the camera also incorporates improvements at the software level. In the S9 we will have the possibility to create videos with effects Loop, Reverse or Swing (the name of Samsung for the already classic boomerang). We will also have AR emojis, the version of Samsung for the animojis that brought the iPhone X with them, and thanks to Bixby we will have recognition of objects, places and instant translation of texts: Bixby Vision.

Let’s talk about security and biometrics

Another remarkable aspect of these Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus has to do with the components that concern their security. Specifically, to the biometric sensors incorporated in both telephones. From fingerprint readers to iris readers, through the new facial recognition, which also forms the tandem with the iris. But let’s go step by step. A phone without a fingerprint reader is no longer understood, except for exceptions such as the iPhone X that try to revert the custom and take everything towards facial recognition. Samsung failed last year with the S8, taking the reader to a very uncomfortable position with the lenses, which caused more fingerprints in the camera than effective unlocks. This year has been fixed, the reader descends, is placed under the camera and is comfortable again. In addition, it will be enough with three supports on it to configure it, everything is more efficient.

[bs-quote quote=”Samsung merges the iris reader with facial recognition, and Intelligent Scan comes to us.” style=”style-13″ align=”center”][/bs-quote]

On the front, we have the iris reader, which has been in Samsung for a few generations, with the exception that it is now combined with face detection. Samsung’s counterattack to Face ID is a combination of eyes and face called “Intelligent Scan“. Up to 100 points on our face and eyes, enough to recognize us and give us access to the phone, or mobile payments that we will have with Samsung Pay and the NFC chip.

The sound of the S, for the first time stereo

It is not a fact that we can ignore because we even emphasize it in each of our analyzes. The sound is such an important part of the multimedia experience as the screen, and this new generation of the Galaxy S has taken a step forward. The speakers on the Samsung S line have traveled from the back to the bottom frame, and in this generation, they double. Samsung incorporates a set of stereo speakers in the configuration of its S9, without distinction between both models. Samsung account that these new stereo speakers multiply by 1.4 the volume of the speaker of the Galaxy S8 and its sound can be improved thanks to the Dolby Atmos technology, included in the phone. As for headphones, Samsung repeats the movement that was made with the Galaxy S8 last year. Again we have AKG headphones that this time have been “tuned by AKG“. They accompany both phones in the box and yes, they connect to the headphone port that Samsung still keeps within its component configurations.
