Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs Galaxy Note 8: this is all that has changed

In a sector where the current trend is for phones to assume increasingly larger bodies, with more screen area, Samsung is still betting on the ‘phablets’ and phones like the Note and its increasingly useful S-Pen seem to have a gap in the market and a healthy community of followers that could even make the ‘Plus’ versions disappear.

Galaxy Note 9 is still a phone aimed at productivity and creativity, as we were presented with the Galaxy Note 7 and Galaxy Note 8. This year, in addition, the ‘gaming’ factor is introduced and that 2018 is being a very remarkable year in terms of mobile games for powerful graphics. It’s time to talk a bit about Fortnite, but first, let’s see what changes in the Galaxy Note 9 with respect to the Galaxy Note 8.

Galaxy Note 9 vs Galaxy Note 8: Design

There has been a major revolution in the design of the Galaxy Note 9 with respect to its predecessor. And, when something works, why play it? This is how we have come to repeat in materials, with glass and metal to make aluminum edges, this time, are laser cut which causes the body to look less thick – although in reality it is 2 millimeters wider.

The weight has also increased, a logical consequence after the increased capacity of the battery. This time, the Note 9 comes six grams heavier that marked a minuscule difference, although we will have to wait to try the sensations that it moves in hand, bearing in mind that it is a mobile by tradition-oriented to work, not to comfort.

In colours, the design of the S Pen is the most groundbreaking to date. As we had seen in all the previous leaks, it is a very striking colour especially accompanied as it comes from the blue colour model, this being the first time that Samsung decides to vary the tone with respect to the phone.

What has changed is, again, the position of the fingerprint reader: if from Note 7 to Note 8 we pass from the front to the back, next to the cameras, the Note 9 re-position the reader so that it remains in one place less controversial: just below the back camera.

The 3.5 mm jack is still there, lovers of quality audio and wired. The IP68 certificate is maintained, as well as the tray for micro SD cards and the USB port of type C.

Galaxy Note 9 vs Galaxy Note 8: Screen

The upper and lower frames have been reduced again – very slightly – and that is the market trends. In such a large phone, the screen without frames looks even better. Of the diagonal of 6.3 inches, we have advanced a millimetre more, but the new 6.4 inches are not accompanied by more resolution so that the density of pixels has dropped from 522 ppi to 514 ppi.

The resolution, as we mentioned, remains in the QHD +, 2,960 pixels by 1,440 pixels that promise a lot of quality in the details for the retinas that require more precision in their panels. These, to top it off, are again Super AMOLED, as we expected, compatible with HDR and Gorilla Glass 5.

The screen of the Note 9, as the numbers show, is the largest to date, although the proportion remains around 18.5: 9 and its total area remains at 83.4% of the body, an increase into 82.98% of its previous model. Quality, as always, of excellent level in all aspects of image management.

Galaxy Note 9 vs Galaxy Note 8: S Pen

The game of colours of the new S Pen (yellow, brown, lilac, black …) is not the only difference from its latest edition. The most distinctive characteristic element of the Note line offers different and interesting novelties, to begin with: it introduces a Bluetooth connection.

With this new connection, the S Pen gains a lot in versatility. It is no longer an annotation instrument, it also works as a remote control and is that thanks to the incorporation of a small capacitor, it has enough battery to pass slides forward or backwards, to make remote clicks to interact with applications or take photos.

Samsung has announced that it opens the SDK to all developers, so the interaction options offered by the S Pen will grow over time if they dare to incorporate their actions into the apps.

The operating distance of the Bluetooth connection of the new smart pen is about 10 meters, according to Samsung, and the sensitivity and accuracy of the S Pen have maintained thanks to the same Wacom technology of 4,096 levels of pressure that the Note 8 already introduced.

Galaxy Note 9 vs Galaxy Note 8: Camera

The double camera came in the transition from Note 7 to Note 8, advancing to the Galaxy S8 model, but this time who comes to the S series trailer is the Note 9: introduces the same double camera with variable aperture f / 1.5-2.4 that the Galaxy S9 and also its optical stabilization, for the two rear sensors.

The camera application and the processing of the images by software has undergone an evolution with respect to the Note 8, with improvements in the detection and optimization of the scenes, better automatic mode and better detection of errors in the images taken, for example, if the image it comes out slightly blurred by a pulse failure or someone appears with the eyes closed.

The front camera of Note 9 maintains the 8 megapixels it got in the previous model and the video modes are the same as Note 8 except for slow motion. Here the Note 9 has returned to be inspired by his brother S9 to incorporate the super slow camera to 960fps that Samsung demonstrated with such pride during the past Mobile World Congress. It also maintains the portrait and zoom mode of two magnifications that premiered in Note 8.

Galaxy Note 9 vs Galaxy Note 8: Performance and Battery

The ‘gaming’ component that we talked about at the beginning is confirmed, already in the beginning, with the masterful marketing move that Samsung has poured us with the presentation of the Galaxy Note 9. For the first time, we are presented with a Note with an exclusive, in concrete a skin to use within the game of the year, Fortnite that will not have any other player and is called ‘Galaxy’. In addition, the Note 9 will be the first to try Fortnite for Android, which will be released this week.

The power to bring that game to life is taken for granted. Here Samsung repeats the same processor that we saw in its flagships earlier this year, The Snapdragon 845 and The Exynos 9810. [Samsung Exynos 9810 vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 845: war at the top]

But where the real improvement is is not in the ‘brain’, but in the memory that accompanies it. If the Note 8 only had the variety of 6 GB of RAM, this year maintains that figure but also adds a variant of 8 GB of RAM, so each new Note proposes a rise of 2 GB of RAM and that is always good.

[bs-quote quote=”More memory, more storage, more battery … the design can be considered continuista, but in the bowels of Note 9 there is a clear evolution.” style=”default” align=”left”][/bs-quote]

The internal memory goes up again, this time with a base that is twice the previous 64 GB of Note 8. With 128 GB of storage, and another higher version with 512 GB, both expandable by MicroSD up to 512 GB additional, Space will not be a problem in Note 9.

More power could mean more heat, but work on refrigeration has improved so much this year that Note 9 does not even need to mount the DeX to lower temperature degrees. The liquid cooling system has expanded its size and dissipates heat better so that Fortnite does not affect its performance and so that a single cable is enough to turn the phone into the brain of a complete computer with a single USB-C adapter cable to HDMI.

Regarding the autonomy, behind are the times in which the Note 7 was so dangerous that the Note 8 did not want to gamble and the battery was reduced to 3,300 mAh. Its 8 security points have given them such confidence that confirming the rumours, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 comes with an impressive 4,000 mAh capacity, 21% more than the Note 8.

Galaxy Note 9 vs Galaxy Note 8: Price

The Note 8 came out when the Galaxy Note 7 had already disappeared from stores. On this occasion, we can still buy any of the two models (Note 8 or Note 9), so it’s worth comparing their prices. The Note 8 was controversial of starting price ( 74,990), but today can already be found for 55,990.

Samsung has two versions of the Galaxy Note 9, this time: the 6 GB of RAM plus 128 GB of storage, in lavender and black colors for 999 dollars (roughly ₹ 68,700) and the exclusive blue model with S Pen yellow that will be 8 GB of RAM with 512 GB of storage and that will be available for a starting price of 1,250 dollars (roughly ₹ 85,900). They will go on sale from August 24.
