Russia released four members of the Revil gang

Four members of the Revil ransom software group were released after being tried in Russia on charges of fraud and malicious software spreading. The court found the period in which the defendants were sentenced to five years of imprisonment during the trial. Thus, Roman Muromsky, Andrei Bessonov, Mikhail Golovachuk and Dmitry Korotaev were released immediately after the penalty. This decision drew attention especially in the international public.

This case, which includes the defendants, is separated from the ransom software attacks of Revil before 2021. The four people were mostly associated with online financial crimes. TASS News Agency in Russia announced that these people have accepted fraud activities targeting US citizens. Especially shopping with stolen credit card information came to the fore.

Revil members made fraud by getting a gift card with stolen cards

According to the statements, criminals actively actively operates from October 2015 to January 2022. During this time, they used the method known as “Carding .. They got a gift card with stolen card information and earned them by selling them. In particular, the number of victims from the United States drew attention.

The court also made transactions on the assets of the defendants. Two 2020 model BMW cars and 2019 model Mercedes-Benz C200 vehicle were confiscated. However, the cash money worth approximately $ 1 million on Korotaev was transferred to the state. However, no additional fines were imposed.

The first operations against the Revil group were carried out in January 2022. Russian security forces detained a total of 14 people. Four of these people were sentenced to imprisonment of up to six and a half years last October. However, there was no development regarding the extradition of these people to the United States.

Although this case is separated from the global attacks of Revil, it is seen as a judicial process identified with the group in the perception of the public opinion. In particular, the attack on the US company Kaaaya was one of the most prominent actions of the group. This attack led to interruptions in the services of hundreds of companies. Since then, Revil’s activities have been largely disrupted.

The security threat posed by Revil in the digital environment has become one of the priority issues of Western countries within the framework of the fight against cyber crimes. In 2021, the United States warned a warning to the Kremlin and said it would take steps on its own if it was not intervened in these groups. Russia’s operations came after these warnings. However, the scope of the proceedings and the penalties imposed were found inadequate by some observers.

In addition, how Russia’s attitude towards cyber criminals would be shaped in the future was a matter of curiosity. In particular, uncertainty continues in areas such as international cooperation, return processes and common cyber security activities. Although the current proceedings are seen as a short -term response, the effect in the long term may be controversial. These developments bring the dynamics of cyber struggle between states again.
