Concerns about user privacy may be behind the introduction of the smart glasses project, which Apple has been working on for a long time, later than expected. According to information shared by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, the company is focusing on developing comprehensive solutions for privacy before launching this new product category. It is stated that the teams working in the Vision hardware group within Apple consider privacy as the top priority of the project. It is stated that this approach is compatible with Apple’s product strategy, which has emphasized the protection of user data for years.
Apple’s entry into the smart glasses market is among the long-awaited developments in the technology world. Despite this, it seems that the company prefers to minimize possible risks rather than rushing. It is known that wearable devices, especially those that constantly detect the environment and contain cameras, bring about various privacy issues for both users and people around them. For this reason, it is reported that Apple is working on new security mechanisms not only on the hardware side but also at the software level.
Apple is developing new privacy measures
According to the information provided by Mark Gurman, Apple is preparing new hardware and software-based privacy features that are not available in its existing products. It is stated that one of the solutions evaluated on the software side will work similar to the system used in Meta’s smart glasses. Accordingly, if the LED indicator indicating that the device is recording is disabled or tampered with, the glasses will automatically block photo and video recording. Thus, it is aimed to prevent the recording indicator from being deliberately hidden.
In addition, it is stated that Apple is also evaluating different hardware options. One of the possibilities that the company is considering is to develop a smart glasses model that does not contain a camera. Another option is to offer a model that has a fully equipped camera system but does not have the function of taking photos and videos. This approach may aim to reduce privacy vulnerabilities while leveraging features such as environmental sensing and augmented reality.
The issue of privacy in the smart glasses market has been coming to the fore more recently. Artificial intelligence-supported smart glasses, offered by Meta in collaboration with Ray-Ban, were at the center of discussions about the possibility of recording without the knowledge of surrounding people. In addition, the products in question were recently subject to a class action lawsuit. It is noteworthy in this respect that Apple developed additional measures before launching its product in order to avoid similar discussions.
On the other hand, Apple’s smart glasses were initially expected to be introduced in 2026. However, according to Bloomberg, the company’s schedule changed and the product launch was moved to the next World Developers Conference (WWDC). Accordingly, Apple is expected to announce its smart glasses at the WWDC event in 2027 and put them on sale towards the end of the year.
Apple has not yet made an official statement about the project. Despite this, the emerging information shows that the company sees user privacy as one of the main priorities in its new product category. It will not be clear until the presentation what hardware features the final product will come with and how the new privacy solutions developed by Apple will work. In this process, the experiences encountered by other manufacturers in the smart glasses market are also among the important factors that can shape Apple’s final design and software preferences.
