Philips Hue can come to Matter-Over-Thread Support in new bulbs

In Philips Hue’s new bulbs MATTER-OVER-Thread Support allegations that can be found are increasing. Amazon packaging images and FCC documents offer signs that confirm this possibility.

1. Matter logo was seen in Amazon packaging

In the boxes of Philips Hue bulbs listed in Amazon, which have not yet been introduced Matter logo found. This was the first concrete sign that shows that products can have direct matter support. Previously, Hue devices only provided matter harmony through Bridge. Such a change can make users connect without Bridge.

2. FCC Documents Matter Installation Codes took place

New in FCC documents revealed by Hueblog Hue white Matter installation codes were seen in the visuals of the bulbs. These codes were next to Bluetooth and Zigbee logos. Such a code indicates that the device is ready for direct matter support. This suggests a thread support that can be opened with software. The documents were later removed, but the leak was shared in reliable sources.

3. Technical infrastructure may be available for thread support

In FCC documents, only Zigbee and Bluetooth are openly listed. Despite this, the documents, “other functions were disabled by software,” the statement drew attention. This was a sign that made Thread was involved at the hardware level. Thread’s use of the same frequency as Zigbee in the 2.4 GHz band strengthened this possibility. Thus, the thread connection can be activated with an update.

4. Bridge dependence may be reduced

Currently, Hue systems offer matter compatibility only through Hue Bridge. Bridge turns the Zigbee connection to Matter. Although this system is functional, it requires additional hardware for some users. The fact that new bulbs are directly compatible with matter will reduce dependence on Bridge. But Bridge will be necessary for advanced features such as dynamic light effects.

5. Matter-Over-Thread is becoming widespread throughout the sector

It is not alone for Philips to step in this direction. IKEA has recently announced that it will offer Matter-Over-Thread support for more than 20 products. On the other hand, different manufacturers are releasing their new Matter -supported devices. These developments show that the ecosystem grows rapidly. The presence of matter logo in Philips Hue product packaging can also be considered as part of this trend.

The Bridge update in June 2025 was the pioneer of this process. With the update released at that time, the current Hue bulbs won Matter support through Bridge. However, this support was provided through Bridge, not directly at the device level. According to Hueblog, Matter signs seen in new products show that this gap can be filled. Thus, Philips aims to support old users and to offer matter harmony directly with their new products.
