Oppo’s new selfie sensor may be more assertive than Apple

It was claimed that Oppo was working on a different front camera system for its new generation smartphones. According to a new leak, the company is testing a high-resolution selfie sensor with a 1:1 square format. While it is stated that the solution in question offers a resolution of 100 megapixels, it is claimed that the system is more advanced than the similar structure used by Apple in the iPhone 17 series. Although there is no official confirmation for now, it is stated that the model indicated by the leak is developed under the Oppo brand.

The first information appeared in February. At that time, it was claimed that Oppo and Huawei were working on a camera solution similar to the square sensor used by Apple in the iPhone 17 series. The newly shared details show that this approach can be taken to a more assertive level, especially on the front camera side. According to the source, the manufacturer on the Android side is actively testing the 1:1 ratio square sensor for the front camera. The brand name was not directly given in the post, however, it is thought that the device belongs to Oppo due to the emoji used.

The 18-megapixel square sensor used by Apple in the iPhone 17 series allows users to take selfies in both landscape and portrait formats without rotating the phone. It is stated that the system that Oppo is allegedly working on will offer much higher resolution. A 100 MP front camera sensor can be advantageous, especially in terms of reducing loss of detail after cropping and creating different framing options. In addition, high resolution can create more flexible usage scenarios for video calls and social media content.

Oppo may present its new selfie camera in the Find X10 series

No other information about the technical details of the device was shared in the leak. Despite this, it is said that the new camera technology can be introduced with the Oppo Find X10 series. The series is expected to be announced in October. Considering that Oppo has stood out in recent years with its Hasselblad collaboration and advanced image processing solutions, especially on the camera side, it is not a surprise that the company is making new experiments with the front camera experience.

Recently, smartphone manufacturers have been focusing more not only on rear camera systems but also on the experience on the front camera side. In particular, the proliferation of short video content, live broadcasts and high-quality video calls has made the technical capacity of selfie cameras more visible. However, it is known that high megapixel values alone do not determine image quality. Sensor size, software optimization, light performance and image processing algorithms continue to determine the final result.

The question of whether the square sensor approach that Oppo is claimed to be testing will become widespread enough to change usage habits is not clear for now. Since Apple’s similar solution is still new, user feedback is limited. However, sensor structures that can adapt to different shooting directions can offer practical advantages, especially for content producers. If Oppo really brings this technology to the Find X10 series, the competition can be expected to become more active on the front camera side.
