OpenAI announced that it will organize a 12-day event series starting from December 5th. At these events, called “12 Days of OpenAI”, the company is expected to introduce its new products and features. According to information given to The Verge by sources close to the subject, it is stated that these promotions may include the long-awaited text-video conversion tool Sora and a new reasoning model. OpenAI made the first announcement for Sora last February.
In his statement at The New York Times’ DealBook conference, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that a new product or feature will be introduced every day during the event. However, no official statement has yet been made about the content of these announcements. Previously, the Wall Street Journal reported that Sora could be released before the end of 2024.
Sora was first introduced in February 2024 and was available to a limited number of artists and creators. However, some artists participating in this early access program leaked the model, claiming that OpenAI was providing free labor. According to The Washington Post, approximately 20 artists gained unauthorized access to the model by bypassing Sora’s authentication system and used this for protest purposes.
OpenAI quickly ended early access following this leak, emphasizing that Sora was still in an exploratory preview phase. Although the company stated that it aimed to develop the model by collaborating with artists, this situation reignited discussions about the role and rights of artists in the development of artificial intelligence models.
OpenAI will fight against giants like Google with Sora
While OpenAI’s work on text-video conversion technology continues, other technology giants are developing similar models. For example, Google announced its own text-to-video model, Veo, in August 2024, and it is currently available in a special review process for Google Vertex AI users. Veo’s introduction comes just three months after Sora was announced in February, showing that competition in the space is increasing rapidly.
OpenAI’s 12-day event series could herald significant innovations in artificial intelligence technologies. Text-to-video conversion tools such as Sora are expected to find wide applications, especially in the media and entertainment industries.
