One-wheeled security robot reaches speeds of up to 30 km

Estonia-based Rollo Robotics has developed an extraordinary robot for security patrols. 1ROLLO introduced an autonomous system that moves on a single wheel. The company launched the product as the world’s first balanced and one-wheeled autonomous security robot defines it as. The robot, which can reach a speed of 30 kilometers per hour, aims to inspect large areas from factories to airports without human intervention.

1ROLLO has a height of approximately 110 centimeters, a weight of 45 kilograms and a single wheel with a diameter of 60 centimeters. Thanks to its narrow body, it can easily move in warehouse corridors, doorways and limited spaces between equipment. Moreover, its ability to change direction without needing a large turning area distinguishes it from traditional four-wheeled security robots.

A high-speed flywheel placed vertically inside the main wheel maintains the robot’s stability. The gyroscopic force created by the flywheel prevents the body from tipping to the right or left during movement. As the robot turns, the system tilts the flywheel in the relevant direction and allows it to lean into the bend, similar to a motorcycle.

High-frequency sensors placed on the body constantly measure the slope, speed and external forces. The control software instantly adjusts the wheel speed and flywheel angle with this data. Rollo Robotics states that the robot can maintain its balance on uneven ground and windy weather conditions.

Artificial intelligence manages the robot’s patrol route

Artificial intelligence-assisted navigationprocesses data from cameras and environmental sensors on the robot. By identifying people, vehicles and fixed obstacles, 1ROLLO can reduce its speed, stop or choose a different route. RTK GNSS positioning technology helps the robot follow the predetermined patrol route with high precision.

Camera system around the robot 360 degree view and collects images regardless of the direction of motion. Computer vision software can detect intrusions, unusual movements, doors left open, and various security risks. When the system detects an abnormality, it sends alerts and live images to the security center via 4G, 5G or Wi-Fi connection.

Modular hardware supports thermal camera, night vision, motion PTZ camera, license plate recognition system, RFID reader and gas sensors. Thus, the robot can also detect dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide or unusual temperature changes. The built-in microphone and speaker allow the operator to remotely talk to people at the scene or give an audible warning.

1ROLLO can work for up to eight hours on a single charge and automatically returns to the wireless charging station when the energy level drops. When more than one robot is operated alternately, facilities can be inspected uninterruptedly throughout the day. The device, which has IP65 protection, can operate at temperatures between minus 20 and 55 degrees Celsius, according to manufacturer data.

Autonomous security robotIt can be used in factories, warehouses, data centers, energy facilities, parking lots, campuses, airports and private properties. While the robot carries out routine patrols, manned security teams can evaluate incoming warnings and intervene at the scene when necessary. The robot can be sent first to areas that pose risks such as poisonous gas, high temperatures or low visibility.

Rollo Robotics plans to offer 1ROLLO through a monthly subscription-based Robotics-as-a-Service model rather than selling it outright. This model is expected to include hardware, maintenance, software updates and some hardware upgrades. The first commercial use of the robot, which is currently in the functional prototype phase, is aimed to begin in 2027.

Use in public areas requires clear rules for storing camera footage, protecting personal data and granting access to images. In addition, encryption of communication channels, protection of remote access with strong authentication, and secure software updates are important. The company has not yet announced the subscription price, first customers and mass production schedule.
