Spotify is working on a new solution to the problems caused by artificial intelligence-generated music content, which has increased rapidly in recent years. The proliferation of low-quality and mass-produced artificial intelligence songs on the platform creates serious problems for artists, although they can often be ignored by listeners. Some of this content may be accidentally or deliberately added to the profiles of real artists. As a result, while the brand identity of the artists is damaged, the bond they establish with the audience is also negatively affected.
The new “Artist Profile Protection” tool tested by Spotify aims to directly intervene in this problem. Thanks to this feature, artists will have the opportunity to review and approve the content uploaded to their name before it is published. Thus, content that suddenly appears on the platform and is similar to the artist’s style but produced by artificial intelligence can be prevented from being associated with the profile.
How does the new Spotify system work?
The system, which is in beta phase, gives artists the final say on the content. Accordingly, when an artist rejects a track uploaded on their behalf, the content in question is not associated with the profile. In addition, these tracks are not included in the listening statistics and are not included in the recommendation algorithms. This approach is considered a practical solution that aims to reduce the false matching problem.
In its statement, Spotify states that adding music to the wrong artist pages on different platforms is a long-standing problem. In addition, it is pointed out that this problem is getting bigger as artificial intelligence tools become accessible. It is emphasized that this situation is disturbing for both artists and listeners.
On the other hand, the pressure created by artificial intelligence content in the music industry is increasing. Recently, Sony demanded that more than 135 thousand AI-generated songs imitating real artists be removed from the platform. Despite this, it seems that similar content continues to be uploaded without slowing down. There are even examples where some groups that left Spotify are represented on the platform with fake content created by artificial intelligence.
Daily download numbers also reveal the extent of the problem. According to estimates, approximately 50 thousand artificial intelligence-generated songs are added to Spotify every day. It is stated that the platform removed around 75 million such content last year. While it becomes inevitable for some tracks to be added to wrong profiles in this density, attempts by malicious users to take advantage of popular artist names also make the situation more complicated.
This new tool that Spotify is testing has the potential to offer a technical and direct solution to the current problem. However, it is not yet clear when the system will be opened to all users. Despite this, it is clear that such tools for protecting artists’ digital identity are becoming increasingly important.
