Netflix is ending support for some older iPhone and iPad models that are stuck on iOS 16. According to 9to5Mac, Netflix is showing users a warning on some iOS 16 devices that says, “We’ve updated the Netflix app! Install iOS 17 or later to get the latest version.”
This change affects devices that can’t update to iOS 17. These devices include the iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, first-generation iPad Pro, and iPad 5. These devices won’t be able to receive new Netflix updates or important updates like bug fixes or security patches. Apple also plans to release iOS 18 on September 16.
Netflix users who have to stay on iOS 16 will be able to access their accounts with the current app version for now. They will also be able to use the service through a browser if the app becomes inaccessible.
What does Netflix discontinuation mean for older devices?
This change poses security risks for older iPhone and iPad users. App updates include not only new features but also patches that close security vulnerabilities. While Netflix continues its development for devices running iOS 17 or later, older devices will be deprived of these updates. Security vulnerabilities are critical, especially for applications that provide services over the internet, as they can endanger users’ personal data.
With Apple’s release of iOS 18, more devices are expected to remain on the old software. While the company offers a faster and more secure user experience with new software updates, older devices will be deprived of these innovations. Especially devices such as the iPhone X and iPhone 8 will be at a disadvantage with this move by Netflix, as they will no longer be able to switch to new operating systems such as iOS 17 and iOS 18.
Netflix users will still be able to access the service via the browser, however, this is a limited solution. The experience of watching videos via the browser is not as optimized as the app, which may increase performance issues users encounter. The interface, especially via the browser, may be less user-friendly than mobile apps.
As a result, Netflix’s move could pose a significant long-term problem for users stuck with older devices. Not being able to take advantage of new features and security updates will shorten the app’s lifespan and force users to switch to a new device.
