Microsoft may offer voluntary separation option to thousands of employees

It is reported that Microsoft is preparing a new voluntary separation program for its employees in the USA. According to information provided by CNBC, Microsoft will offer employees who meet certain criteria the option to quit at their own will. The program is planned to specifically cover employees up to senior director level. In this context, the sum of the employees’ ages and the years they have spent in the company will be required to be at least 70. It is stated that in the first phase, approximately 7 percent of the workforce in the USA can benefit from this offer.

For Microsoft, which has approximately 125 thousand employees in the USA as of June 2025, this rate means a scope that can theoretically extend to 8 thousand 750 people. This number remains at a lower level compared to the layoffs the company carried out in May and July 2025, affecting approximately 15 thousand employees. Despite this, it is considered that if the voluntary separation proposal is accepted by a wide audience, its impact could be significant. This approach stands out as a different method in that it offers employees the right to choose instead of direct dismissal.

In the internal memo shared by Microsoft Human Resources Director Amy Coleman, it is stated that this program aims to give employees the opportunity to take a new step on their own terms. Accordingly, various financial supports will be provided to employees within the scope of the proposal. However, no official statement has yet been made about the exact details of the program and which departments it will affect and to what extent. It is not clear whether the company will respond to questions on the subject.

Microsoft draws attention with its cost structure and artificial intelligence investments

The steps taken by Microsoft recently do not seem to be limited only to organizational simplification. While the company’s layoffs in 2025 are aimed at reducing management layers and restructuring the gaming unit, it is thought that there are different dynamics behind the new voluntary separation program. Intensive investments, especially in the field of artificial intelligence, have become a determining factor on the cost side.

It was announced that the company made capital expenditures of $ 37.5 billion in the second quarter of the 2026 fiscal year. A significant portion of these expenditures was allocated to the expansion of the data center infrastructure. In addition, the increasing demand for cloud and artificial intelligence services causes Microsoft to direct more resources to these areas. This situation may indirectly lead to changes in workforce planning.

Although there is no picture that artificial intelligence investments directly reduce the number of employees, it seems that the company has rearranged its budget priorities. This may cause some positions to lose their importance or be redefined over time. On the other hand, the voluntary separation model offers alternatives to employees and allows the company to increase its operational flexibility.
