Microsoft added two new lower-priced models to the Surface product family. The company launched new configurations of the 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop with 8 GB RAM. Thus, devices that were previously only offered with 16 GB RAM options were reduced to more accessible price levels with alternatives with lower memory capacity. The new models, which Windows Central first drew attention to, went on sale for $849 and $949, respectively.
While the 8 GB RAM version of Surface Pro carries a price tag of $ 849, the 13-inch Surface Laptop with the same memory capacity is sold for $ 949. Despite this, these prices remain above the starting level of the devices when they were first introduced. In 2025, Microsoft introduced the 12-inch Surface Pro with 16 GB RAM and 256 GB storage for $799, and the 13-inch Surface Laptop with 16 GB RAM and 256 GB storage for $899. The company increased the prices of both models to $ 1,049 and $ 1,199 respectively in April 2026. New 8 GB RAM options are positioned as lower-priced alternatives after this increase.
Choosing 8 GB RAM eliminates Copilot Plus support
Apart from the change in memory capacity, there are no hardware updates in the new models. Microsoft maintains the 8-core Snapdragon X Plus processor and 256 GB storage on both devices. Therefore, while the basic performance features remain largely the same as in previous versions, reducing the amount of memory by half makes a significant difference in terms of artificial intelligence features.
The new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models do not support Microsoft’s Copilot Plus PC platform. The reason for this is that Copilot Plus features require at least 16 GB of RAM to work. Real-time subtitles, advanced AI-supported image editing tools and various generative AI functions running on the device will not be available on these models. This means that users who prefer lower-priced Surface models will not be able to benefit from Microsoft’s latest artificial intelligence experiences.
On the other hand, although 8 GB of RAM is sufficient for daily use scenarios, it may offer a more limited experience for users who run many applications simultaneously or work with productivity-oriented workloads. Considering the increasing memory requirements of the Windows operating system and artificial intelligence-based applications in recent years, 16 GB RAM has become the new standard for many users.
Although Microsoft’s price reduction attracts attention, new Surface models still lag behind more affordable alternatives in the competitive market. According to the information stated in the news, the $599 MacBook Neo continues to be one of the notable options in the laptop market with its performance and lower sales price. This table shows that although Microsoft offers more affordable Surface models, competition is becoming more and more decisive in the price-performance balance. Not only the starting price but also factors that affect long-term usage experience, such as memory capacity and artificial intelligence features, remain important for users when choosing.
