Microsoft offers under Windows operating system Family Safety from the beginning of this month, Google Chrome It came up with a problem that prevented opening the browser. This feature, which is used for content filtering especially for children, caused Chrome to be launched in some users systems. The browser closes or does not start without any error message when you want to open. This situation started to be shared in Social Media and Support Forums for the first time on June 3. While reports on the subject increase over time, temporary solutions began to spread among users.
Google’s Chrome support unit announced the source of the problem as a mistake in Microsoft’s Family Safety settings. When this setting is enabled, the Chrome.exe process is stopped by the system in some systems. Chrome Support Manager Ellen T. said in a statement that it was a triggered behavior at the system level and only affects the Chrome browser. However, alternative browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Opera reported that there is no problem. Microsoft has not published an official correction.
Users have tried to develop different temporary solutions to overcome the blocking. One of them is to change the name of Chrome’s executable file, for example, to make it “chrome1.exe .. Some users say that this method allows the browser to open. In addition, it is recommended to turn off the ile filter of inappropriate websites ”from the Family Safety Control Panel. However, this method disables the entire internet filter, so child can create an important weakness for the protection of users.
Microsoft has not yet offered an official solution, the browser can be operated temporarily
Family Safety’s features allow parents to control their children’s digital activities. The functions such as screen time setting, application usage tracking and web content filtering are offered with this tool. However, the content filtering system does not work fully except Microsoft Edge browser. In other browsers, users need to define manual permission, and this structure is currently completely disabled in Chrome. This limits the availability of the system for both parents and students.
Any official description or correction update from the Microsoft front has not yet been released. Chromium engineers said Microsoft offers guidance only for individual user applications at the entrance to the error monitoring of 10 June. Accordingly, Microsoft proposes temporary solutions to users who reach them directly, but does not provide information about a systematic update plan. This approach makes the solution of the problem for a wider audience.
In the past years, it is known that Microsoft has made various blocking moves against Chrome in Windows. In order to bring Edge browser to the forefront, steps such as warnings, artificial intelligence -supported guidance, advertising -like notifications shown on the download page have been the subject of discussion. Therefore, the current Family Safety problem is interpreted as a deliberate blocking by some users. Although it is thought that there is a software error in the current situation, doubts continue because of the company’s history in this field.
In the light of all these developments, both individual users and institutional structures such as schools have to continue to use their systems with temporary solutions. With Family Safety’s content filtering feature, Chrome’s incompatible work creates problems, especially when children prefer Chrome on home computers. In this context, it is seen that Microsoft should apply more comprehensive test processes in such system tools and make it more compatible with competing applications. Otherwise, such technical problems may cause negative effects in the fields of education and safety beyond daily use.
