Michael Dell says memory shortage could worsen in 2027

Michael Dell said that the supply shortage in the memory market may worsen next year. Speaking in a CNBC interview on October 13, Dell Technologies CEO stated that the problem could extend to four years. Thus, the memory demand caused by artificial intelligence seems to remain on the agenda of computer manufacturers for a longer time.

Dell’s assessment does not provide a definitive recovery timetable as of today. The manager explains that he does not expect the gap between demand and current production capacity to close in a short time. The expression he used, especially for the next year, indicates that the balance of supply and demand may be more difficult.

The main problem here is that a new memory factory cannot start production immediately when orders increase. Dell emphasizes that construction of new facilities can take approximately four years. This period transforms the investment decisions manufacturers make to keep up with today’s demand into future capacity.

Dell’s fiscal 2027 second quarter results show the company received $60.9 billion in new orders for AI servers. In the same period, revenue from servers optimized for artificial intelligence reached 16.4 billion dollars, while pending orders in this area amounted to 95 billion dollars. These figures also show the scale of the demand in Michael Dell’s statement within the company’s own operations.

Dell says new production capacity takes time to come online

In addition, the high bandwidth memory used by data centers and the RAM in a laptop are not directly equivalent to the same product. However, both are affected by the capacity and investment decisions of large manufacturers. Therefore, the growth in artificial intelligence infrastructure does not proceed completely separate from the supply agenda of consumer electronics.

On the other hand, the four-year period should not be interpreted as meaning that the prices of all memory types will increase on the same day. Product type, manufacturer’s contracts, stocks and order volume may produce different results. Dell’s statement doesn’t give next month’s store price for a specific RAM kit or SSD.

The most concrete aspect of the statement for those who are considering renewing their computers is that it does not support the expectation of a relief that covers all products in a short time. Still, a single executive’s insight isn’t enough of a benchmark to immediately purchase a particular device. Current price, required capacity and product lifespan are all important.

Dell, 2027 He highlighted again the impact of artificial intelligence investments on hardware supply with the warning he voiced for. The capacity increases of memory manufacturers and the speed of orders coming from data centers will determine how this expectation will be shaped. The statement remains an executive estimate of the duration of the problem.
