Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in an internal meeting with company employees that the development speed of artificial intelligence agents is behind expectations. According to information reported by Reuters, Zuckerberg stated that the pace of progress that executives had previously predicted has not yet been realized. The statements are a remarkable assessment, considering Meta’s recent large-scale investments and organizational changes in the field of artificial intelligence. In recent months, the company has both reorganized its employee distribution and taken comprehensive steps to expand its AI-focused teams.
According to the news previously published by Bloomberg, Meta laid off approximately 8 thousand employees at the beginning of the year. This number corresponds to approximately 10 percent of the company’s corporate employees. In addition, approximately 7 thousand employees were directed to different artificial intelligence teams. One of these teams stands out as a unit within the company that operates under the name “Agent Transformation” and focuses on the development of artificial intelligence agents. This restructuring process of Meta was implemented with the aim of using company resources more efficiently, after the competition in the field of productive artificial intelligence accelerated.
Meta is waiting a few more months for the results of its artificial intelligence investments
According to Reuters, Zuckerberg also touched upon the layoffs at the meeting. Meta CEO stated that the process did not proceed as smoothly as planned and that the decisions taken could not be implemented ideally. Despite this, he said that these steps were taken due to concerns about adapting to rapid change in the technology sector. According to Zuckerberg’s assessment, company management was concerned about the risk of not achieving the necessary transformation in a timely manner.
However, Zuckerberg also admitted that the advantages of the new artificial intelligence-focused organizational structure have not yet fully emerged. Still, he said he believes the effects of the company’s investments in AI will become more visible in the next three to six months. This statement shows that Meta is focusing on the medium-term effects of its recent comprehensive artificial intelligence strategy rather than its short-term results.
On the other hand, different evaluations about Meta’s artificial intelligence teams have also been reflected in the public. In some research news, it was reported that some engineers working in the AI unit the company established months ago described the working conditions as quite tiring and intense. These news included claims that employees were having difficulties due to high expectations and intense work tempo. Meta did not make a comprehensive statement about these evaluations.
Zuckerberg’s statements reveal that the high level of investment in artificial intelligence does not guarantee the desired corporate transformation in a short time. Despite dedicating significant resources, the company admits that time is needed for AI agents to reach the expected level of productivity. Financial results and new product updates to be announced in the coming months will show more clearly how these investments of Meta are reflected in operational efficiency and product development processes.
