Meta releases new Forum app for Facebook Groups

Meta has quietly launched its new “Forum” app, which separates the Facebook Groups experience from the main Facebook app. The application, which was published on the App Store without an official announcement by the company, was first noticed by social media consultant Matt Navarra. While the forum gathers the Facebook Groups that users are already members of under a single stream, it also focuses on discovering new communities. It is worth noting that the application has not been added to the Turkish store yet.

In the App Store description, Forum is described as “a private space for the conversations that matter most to users.” Group posts, mixed with friend posts, Page content, and algorithmic suggestions in the main Facebook app, are presented as a completely separate experience in the Forum. This way, users can see a simpler flow that focuses only on community discussions. In addition, during the initial installation, the application asks users what type of content they would like to see more of and prepares new group suggestions based on their interests.

Shares made via the forum are directly synchronized with the Facebook account. When a post is shared on the Forum, the same content can also be viewed on the Facebook application. In return, group posts on Facebook are also moved to the Forum stream. An existing Facebook account is required to log in to the app. The anonymous username system, which Meta has recently popularized, is also available in the Forum. Users can hide their real names in public interactions, but group administrators still have access to the accounts’ real credentials.

There are two different artificial intelligence features in the Meta Forum application.

One of the striking aspects of the Forum was its artificial intelligence-supported tools. The first feature, called “Ask”, aims to show results from a single point by bringing together the answers from different groups of which the user is a member. In this way, common answers can be summarized instead of searching for the same question in different communities one by one. Considering that Meta has recently integrated productive artificial intelligence features into its social platforms more intensively, it seems that the Forum is a continuation of this approach.

In addition, the application also includes a separate artificial intelligence assistant for group administrators. This tool was developed to streamline moderation processes, assist with content management, and speed up administrative tasks. It is stated that such tools can save time for administrators, especially since the moderation burden reaches serious levels in large Facebook Groups. However, it is known that artificial intelligence-supported moderation systems cannot completely eliminate problems such as wrong decision-making or incomplete evaluation of the context.

The idea of Meta’s independent group app is not new. The company previously offered a separate application called Facebook Groups, but this application was closed in 2017. Despite this, Facebook Groups have remained one of the most active sections of the platform over the years. Particularly niche interest communities, local advice groups, and question-and-answer-based posts were among the elements that kept the interaction within Facebook alive.

Due to the structure of the forum, the application has already started to be compared to Reddit. Recommendations based on real user experiences, community discussions and question-answer-oriented content create similarities between the two platforms. Despite this, the fact that the Forum runs entirely on Facebook infrastructure and uses the existing group ecosystem takes the application to a different point. The extent to which the application will be adopted by users will become clearer in the coming period.
