Meta is working on a mixed reality device that looks like a pair of large glasses, but is smaller than the standard. Codenamed “Puffin,” the glasses are not expected to hit the market before 2027. It’s also worth noting that the glasses aren’t guaranteed to hit the market.
The glasses are expected to weigh around 110 grams, which would put them somewhere between Meta’s lightweight Ray-Ban smart glasses and the bulkier Quest 3 headset.
However, according to The Information, the company will likely have to make some adjustments to make the device smaller, as the glasses could have an external package containing the battery and processor, similar to the wired battery pack that comes with the Apple Vision Pro.
The mixed reality headset is said to have “pancake” lenses that could allow it to have a thinner profile. It will also reportedly offer video pass-through so users can see their surroundings beyond the screens, and use hand and eye tracking for controls.
Meta revises wearable product plans
This latest rumor could be interpreted as an indication that Meta is exploring ways to make its devices more appealing to users who don’t want to wear a heavy headset for long periods of time. Last week, news revealed that Meta had finished work on a high-end mixed reality headset codenamed La Jolla. Meta is also set to unveil its new Orion smart glasses at its Connect conference in September.
