Meta aims to enrich the user experience by offering a new functionality on the social media platform Threads. The company announced that it has integrated the feature of adding locations to posts into the platform. This new feature allows users to provide more detailed information about their location in their posts. However, instead of sharing an exact map location, this functionality allows specifying the names of general areas such as a city, neighborhood or restaurant.
Meta’s new location tagging feature aims to provide more context for users who want to add their location to the content of posts. Other users who click on a post with a location tag added will have the opportunity to see other posts belonging to the same location. Thus, the process of discovering content through certain regions will be easier. However, this feature is not currently accessible for users in Turkey. General access to the Threads platform from Turkey is closed, causing such new functions to be unavailable.
Location tagging feature is currently only active on mobile
This innovation offered by Meta is currently only active in the mobile application. Both Android and iOS users can add a location via a pin icon on the post creation screen. The application offers users a wide range of options when entering location information, allowing them to tag the city or a more specific region. For example, a user can generally tag the city they are in or choose a more specific location, down to the restaurant they are located in. This feature works in a similar structure to the location tagging system previously used on Instagram.
However, it is stated that this functionality is not yet available for the web version of Threads. This feature, which is currently only available through the mobile application, can also be activated through desktop browsers in the future. Although there is no official statement yet about when desktop users can use this functionality, it is estimated that a development in this direction is being worked on.
The fact that general access to the Threads platform from Turkey is blocked prevents users in Turkey from experiencing many innovations on the platform, including this new feature offered by Meta. Users in Turkey cannot currently access Threads, which Instagram positions as an alternative social media platform. Therefore, new functionalities such as location tagging cannot be tested by social media users in Turkey. Unless the access situation in Turkey changes, the new features added by Meta to the Threads platform will remain closed to local users.
The location tagging feature, which is not yet active in the web-based version, seems to make a significant contribution to Threads’ content creation and discovery processes when it becomes available to desktop users in the future. This new function, activated for mobile users, aims to contribute to the platform becoming more interactive and offering regional discovery opportunities.
