Meta continues to develop the Threads platform, which competes with X and has been closed to Turkey since the end of April. In this context, the company is introducing new features that will improve the user experience and make the platform more functional. Particularly advanced search capabilities and expanded trend topics are among the highlights of these updates.
Threads users will now be able to search for posts within a specific date range or by focusing on a single account. This feature works similar to the detailed search options offered by the X platform. In addition, the new trend page, which has started to be tested in the USA, not only includes more topics that users can follow, but also makes it easier to understand the topics other users are talking about with summaries created by artificial intelligence. Adam Mosseri, Meta’s Instagram manager, announced that the testing process of these innovations has started.
Major changes to Threads flow
Meta also launched the customizable streaming feature on the Threads platform this week. Users will now be able to pin multiple custom feeds to their homepage and create their own lists for specific topics or accounts. This innovation provides greater flexibility beyond algorithm-based content recommendations or chronological follow feeds. However, it is stated that this feature has been available on the Bluesky platform for a while and Meta developed its own version in a short time.
Additionally, one of the biggest criticisms of Threads’ default feed, the issue of irrelevant content, is also addressed. Mosseri explained that the algorithm has now been changed to prioritize posts from accounts that users follow. Still, there are some questions about whether this change will work to make the platform feel more up-to-date and lively.
On the other hand, Bluesky, one of Meta’s competitors, continues to rapidly grow its user base. Bluesky, which has reached 20 million users in recent weeks, is adding one million new users daily. Although Threads has a larger user base, Bluesky’s rapid rise is considered an important competitive signal for Meta.
Although these innovations offered by Meta for Threads seem to attract the attention of users, it will become clear over time what position the platform will take in the competitive environment.
