Linux 7.4 will turn on HDMI 2.1 by default on AMD Radeon

The Linux 7.4 kernel is preparing to enable the long-awaited HDMI 2.1 Fixed Rate Link connection by default on AMD Radeon graphics cards. According to the information provided by Phoronix through AMDGPU updates, the new code will not only offer higher display bandwidth; FreeSync, variable refresh rate and automatic low latency mode will also be available with the same version. Thus, users who connect a Radeon-based Linux computer to an HDMI 2.1 television will be able to access higher resolution and refresh rate options without turning to DisplayPort. The update also directly expands the connection options for users who set up a living room computer.

FRL refers to the transmission method that exceeds the bandwidth limits of the TMDS connection in HDMI 2.0. This method enables data rates of 120 Hz at 4K resolution and higher on suitable hardware. However, support is not just dependent on the kernel update. The HDMI controller on the graphics card, the cable, and the television must support the targeted display mode.

Support for HDMI 2.1 in AMD’s open source driver has been delayed for years due to licensing and technical restrictions. The company and open source developers have prepared multiple sets of patches to properly add the necessary functionality to the driver. The update, which is ready to be integrated into Linux 7.4, turns FRL from an experimental option to the default behavior on supported systems.

Variable refresh rate matches the display’s refresh time with the frames produced by the graphics card. Thus, while image tearing is reduced, a smoother presentation is achieved in games. FreeSync is AMD’s brand name for this function; VRR refers to the more general HDMI standard. ALLM can also automatically switch the television to low-latency gaming mode.

The new version is especially important for those who use living room computers. While most modern televisions offer high refresh rates via HDMI, DisplayPort remains more common on desktop monitors. Therefore, the lack of full HDMI 2.1 functionality in the combination of Linux and Radeon limited the display options offered by the same hardware on other operating systems. Linux 7.4 can largely close this gap.

On the other hand, it is not guaranteed that every card and screen combination will work perfectly during the first deployment. HDMI receivers can use different connection speeds, color formats and firmware behavior. Developers will therefore continue to monitor compatibility bugs throughout kernel candidate releases. Additional functionality such as Display Stream Compression may also need separate patches and further testing.

The final release schedule of Linux 7.4 will be finalized according to the candidates in the kernel development process. If the patch sequence comes together as planned, distributions using the updated AMDGPU driver will offer FRL and gaming-focused HDMI features with the new core. The user also has up-to-date Mesa packages and television software, which will increase the likelihood of achieving the expected experience.
