It is possible to follow fediverse accounts on Threads

Meta’s social media platform Threads is deepening its integration with decentralized social networks with a new feature that allows users to directly follow accounts on Mastodon and other fediverse apps. This step was announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. It is worth reminding at this point that Threads is not currently accessible in Turkey.

From the early days of Threads, Meta promised integration into ActivityPub, the open source protocol that supports the “fediverse” ecosystem of decentralized services such as Mastodon. This integration aims to enable users to interact seamlessly between different platforms.

With the new feature, Threads users can view profiles on Mastodon and similar platforms and follow these accounts directly through Threads by enabling “Fediverse sharing” from the settings in the application. This development is considered an important step for Threads to adapt to a broader ActivityPub ecosystem.

However, there are some limitations to Threads’ fediverse support. For example, users cannot directly search for accounts on other servers; They can only find fediverse accounts that follow them or interact with their posts. Additionally, Threads users cannot currently respond to posts from Mastodon or other ActivityPub services, meaning interactions are one-way.

Meta’s in-app notification states that this feature is still in beta and some posts may not appear in Threads. Despite this, Adam Mosseri, Meta’s head of Instagram, stated that “more integration features are on the way.” This announcement suggests that fediverse users may not have to wait long to see deeper integrations.

These developments are among the steps taken towards Meta’s goal of integrating social media platforms into a broader and decentralized digital world. However, it remains unclear exactly when this integration will be completed and how widely users will be able to interact with the fediverse.

Threads provides greater flexibility with fediverse integration

On the other hand, this move by Meta aims to offer its users more flexibility and cross-platform interaction. This strategy can help users deliver their content to larger audiences and have a smoother experience across different social networks.

Threads’ integration with fediverse is considered an important step towards creating a more open and connected structure in the social media ecosystem. How users adopt these new features and how Meta’s future integration plans will be shaped are among the issues that will be followed closely in terms of the evolution of the social media world.
