iPhone 17e disassembly revealed: MagSafe can be added to iPhone 16e

The iPhone 17e model, which Apple recently introduced, contains limited innovations compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 16e. One of the most striking among these innovations stands out as MagSafe support. However, a detailed teardown of the device points to unexpected compatibility on the hardware side. According to the analysis, iPhone 16e users can benefit from MagSafe features by replacing a certain part. This reveals that Apple offers more commonality between the two models in terms of hardware than it thinks.

The disassembly process carried out by iFixit reveals the critical role of the rear panel design. Accordingly, the back panel of the iPhone 17e is physically compatible with the iPhone 16e. When this panel replacement is performed, the MagSafe magnet array is activated on the old model device. In addition, it is emphasized that such a hardware change requires technical knowledge and attention. Although the process seems simple in theory, the risks of damage that may occur during user intervention are among the factors that should not be ignored.

Hardware similarity between iPhone 17e and 16e is quite high

The findings reveal that the hardware similarity between the two models is quite high. In addition, it is noteworthy that many components, especially the logic board, are interchangeable. The use of the same battery with a capacity of 15.56 Wh in both devices stands out as another factor supporting this compatibility. Despite this, it seems that some functions do not work fully after the panel replacement. In particular, the disablement of the Face ID system is considered a significant limitation of such an upgrade.

On the other hand, technical differences are also noteworthy on the wireless charging side. Since the iPhone 16e model does not support the Qi2 wireless charging standard, it cannot always reach the maximum speeds of 15W offered via MagSafe. However, MagSafe-specific software features are not activated in this model. For example, animations that appear when the magnetic accessory is attached or some functions based on system integration cannot be used despite this hardware change. However, basic magnetic alignment and accessory usage benefits can be achieved.

In addition to all this, the dismantling report also provides remarkable data in terms of repair processes. High compatibility between components allows technical services to perform part replacements more easily. This can provide cost and time advantages, especially when replacing parts such as the screen, battery and back panel. In addition, Apple’s spare parts policy and pricing continue to determine the prevalence of such transactions.

In the first evaluation by iFixit, the iPhone 17e model was given a provisional repairability score of 7 out of 10. However, for this score to be finalized, Apple is expected to clarify spare parts access and pricing details. Despite this, the emerging picture indicates that Apple devices have moved towards a more modular and repairable structure in recent years.
