The Indonesian government banned the sale and use of the iPhone 16 series due to Apple’s failure to fulfill its investment commitments in the country. This ban covers the iPhone 16, which Apple launched this fall, as well as other devices such as the Apple Watch Series 10. The government stated that it took this step after Apple did not realize its promised investments in Indonesia.
The ban covers not only new sales but also previously sold iPhone 16s. This may cause problems, especially for tourists traveling to the country. Regarding the issue, Indonesian Industry Minister Gumiwang Kartasasmita said, “If there is an iPhone 16 working in Indonesia, I can say that this device is illegal. “Report such devices to us,” he said.
The Indonesian government requires Apple to meet certain investment commitments in order to operate in the country. Apple had pledged to spend $109 million in Indonesia, pledging to invest in local infrastructure and supply chain. However, Apple has reportedly completed approximately $95 million of this commitment and remains $14 million short.
The fate of iPhone 16 models in Indonesia is uncertain
The Indonesian government imposes a 40 percent local content requirement for foreign companies to operate in the country. In this regard, Apple also promised to establish research and development centers in Indonesia, and these centers were called “Apple academies”. However, it appears that these commitments have not been fully fulfilled so far.
It is not yet clear what action Apple will take against the ban.
