Ikea has announced that the Matter support it announced two years ago is finally available for its Dirigera smart home hub. The software update allows all of Ikea’s Zigbee-based smart home devices (such as lighting, curtains, remotes, air purifiers, and sensors) to communicate with Matter-enabled systems. This development will allow Ikea’s smart home devices to work seamlessly with Matter-compatible products from other companies.
This bridging support for the Matter protocol is a small but important step for Ikea towards full compliance with the new smart home standards. This approach is similar to the cautious strategy followed by Philips Hue, but Ikea is expected to achieve better results. On the other hand, some companies like Aqara have adopted Matter support earlier, launching native Matter devices that do not require a bridge for protocol translation.
Ikea’s smart home hubs have offered custom solutions that integrate with systems from brands like Apple, Google and Amazon. With the support of Matter, we have expanded these integrations even further, said David Granath, Product Manager for Ikea Sweden. “By combining our decades of experience in home living with innovative technology, we believe we are in a unique position to lower the barriers to a smarter everyday life for more people,” Granath added.
Matter support will be available in all regions where Dirigera smart home hubs are sold.
Ikea Dirigera to Enhance Smart Home Experience with Matter Support
Matter stands out as a new communication protocol that allows smart home devices to work more seamlessly and universally with each other. With this Matter support added to the Dirigera center, Ikea aims to make home automation easier by offering its users wider compatibility with different devices. In addition, Ikea’s rollout of this update in all regions demonstrates the brand’s commitment to providing a more integrated smart home experience to its global customer base.
Ikea’s approach focuses on providing stronger support for the Matter protocol to enable smart home devices to communicate more easily with each other using a universal language. The proliferation of Matter-enabled devices could help users experience fewer technical challenges when switching between devices. On the other hand, with Matter support, the need for bridging processes is reduced, and the ability for devices to communicate directly could have a positive impact on the user experience.
