Humane’s AI Pin device, which is expected to bring a new breath to the field of artificial intelligence-based wearable technology, has been on the agenda with various problems since its launch. The company recently announced that it has recalled the 10500 charging box due to the risk of overheating in the charging box of the device. This decision was made after it was determined that the charging case’s lithium polymer battery could overheat, posing a fire risk. In the statement made by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), it was stated that Humane AI Pin charging boxes were released from November 2022 to May 2023.
In an email the company previously sent to customers, it was stated that this problem could pose a serious security risk, but so far only one case of overheating and melting of the charging box has been reported. Fortunately, no injuries or property damage occurred in this incident. Humane also emphasized that although the charging box was recalled, the AI Pin device, the device’s Battery Booster accessory and the charging pad were not affected by this safety issue.
Humane’s first product, AI Pin, experienced difficulties in sales performance despite its technological innovations. After the launch, it received negative comments regarding the functionality and practicality of the device. Users frequently returned the device, stating that the features offered by AI Pin did not meet expectations. It is known that the company has recently reduced its product price in order to achieve a competitive position in the market. The fact that the charging box is no longer included in low-priced models is considered as part of this strategy of the company. However, despite these moves, it seems difficult for the device to gain widespread acceptance and expand its user base.
Humane also continues to provide software updates to improve the performance of the AI Pin. In its statement on the X platform at the beginning of this month, the company announced that the new updates include a comprehensive update called “CosmOS 1.2”. With this update, the company aims to improve the user experience by strengthening the software infrastructure of the device. The CosmOS 1.2 update is expected to offer significant improvements, especially on the efficiency and functionality of the device.
Customers are offered two options for the recalled charging cases: Full refund or exchange. Those who purchase the charging box independently will receive a refund of $149, and those who purchase the AI Pin as part of the complete package will receive a refund of $129. On the other hand, the new and safe charging box model developed by Humane to solve this problem is expected to be released within three to six months. It is also wondered what kind of financial path Humane will follow during this period.
Humane AI may revise Pin strategy
This vulnerability issue in the company’s charging case and the device’s difficulty in the market may lead Humane to re-evaluate its position in the industry. Although it is seen as a very innovative product in the technology world, AI Pin’s problems with functionality and security seem to cause Humane to review its strategy. It is possible that the company will find a buyer in this process or make a new initiative by making the CosmOS software compatible with other devices.
