With the iOS 26.4 update released by Apple at the end of March, support for third-party artificial intelligence chat bots was provided on the CarPlay side. However, in order for this integration to work, application developers also had to update their own software. While OpenAI took the first step, Perplexity also introduced CarPlay support in a short time. Now, Grok, developed by xAI, has become the third major artificial intelligence chatbot to gain Apple CarPlay support.
Thanks to the latest update released for Grok’s iOS application, users can now interact directly with Grok via the in-car screen. Thus, it becomes possible to access the artificial intelligence-supported chat experience without holding the phone while driving. This new structure offered by Apple on the CarPlay platform attracts attention, especially in terms of applications that center on the use of voice commands. However, for the system to work, both iOS 26.4 or newer version must be installed on the iPhone and the current version of the Grok application must be installed.
Various basic controls are also offered to Grok users in the CarPlay interface. Users can see the list of recent conversations on the vehicle screen and continue existing conversations from there. In addition, the option to start a new chat is also available directly via CarPlay. Especially on long journeys or when navigation is intensive, such voice-centered access options can provide remarkable convenience.
Grok works with audio options on CarPlay
Grok’s CarPlay integration isn’t just limited to starting conversations. Users also have the option to temporarily mute an ongoing conversation without ending it completely. In addition, Grok’s sound options can be changed directly via the CarPlay interface. Thus, the user experience is made more suitable for vehicle use.
After OpenAI made the ChatGPT application compatible with CarPlay at the beginning of April, Perplexity also released a similar update. With Grok starting to offer this support, the number of artificial intelligence-based applications continues to increase on Apple’s in-car software platform. On the other hand, although it is known that Apple is working on its own productive artificial intelligence solutions, the company continues to make room for third-party applications for now.
The proliferation of artificial intelligence chatbots on CarPlay is also changing the methods of accessing information while driving. However, it seems that discussions on the security side continue. Although the aim is to reduce distraction thanks to the focus on voice usage, the issue of how in-car interactions will affect driving safety remains important. Still, current integrations show that car displays are starting to move beyond just being used for media and navigation purposes.
