X started to summarize the trending news on its platform with Grok, supported by artificial intelligence. This feature is offered under the name “Stories on X” and is currently only available to premium subscribers. In the post announcing this feature, X's engineering team stated that Grok analyzes user posts and creates short text summaries.
Grok creates short texts on trending news and topics by summarizing users' posts. While some summaries are news-oriented, others are presented as summaries of discussions taking place on the platform. One user shared a screenshot that included summaries of Apple's earnings report and aid to Ukraine, as well as a summary of an online discussion between Elon Musk and other prominent figures about the national debt.
This approach is similar to the platform's long-existing Moments feature, which selects authoritative posts about major news and cultural events. This feature, managed by a team, was closed in 2022.
Like other artificial intelligence-based tools, Grok can make errors in its content. That's why it says on the summaries, “This story is a summary of posts on X and may change over time. Grok may make mistakes, verify the outputs.” There is a warning: Grok is known to not have the best track record when it comes to accurately interpreting current events.
Grok was previously noted to have misunderstood NBA player Klay Thompson's phrase “throwing a brick” in the context of a basketball game, creating a strange story about him being on a “vandalism spree.”
