Google Sheets Canvas turns tables into mini applications

Google, Google Sheets Canvas announced the feature on August 13, bringing spreadsheets to Gemini-powered interactive workspaces. Canvas, from existing data Kanban boards, dashboards, calendars, heatmaps and gallery views is preparing. Moreover, Gemini creates these screens without writing code or formulas, using commands given in natural language. Data changes made on Canvas are also reflected in the source Google Sheets cells in real time.

Google first showed Canvas as a feature in alpha phase at the Cloud Next event in April 2026. In that presentation, the company shared usage examples such as dashboards, heat maps and Kanban boards. Google then began expanding the reach of the feature with the announcement on August 13. Canvas can read source data and write new information to the same data through the visual interface it creates.

On the Gemini side, the process proceeds with natural language commands and the data on the current worksheet serves as the main source. For example, it is possible to prepare a Kanban board that separates tasks according to their status or to produce scenario comparisons from financial data. Additionally, when you move cards to different columns, Canvas changes the values in the relevant cells accordingly. Google also demonstrates this two-way data flow with examples such as student study plans and wedding seating arrangements.

However, Canvas is not limited to the first created screen; it is possible to change the view by giving new commands to Gemini. One of the examples on Google’s help page switches the existing dashboard to a dark theme with a new prompt. Canvas is based on data in a single worksheet and accesses existing Canvas studies from the menu at the bottom of the Sheets. On the sharing side, the existing access permissions in the Google Sheets file remain valid for Canvas.
