Google continues to improve user experience by adding new features to Google Messages, the messaging application in the Android ecosystem. Recently, thanks to its collaboration with Samsung, Google Messages has become the default messaging application on many Samsung phones. This strategic step aims to make it easier for Rich Communication Service (RCS) technology to reach a wider audience. With the high-quality media sharing and advanced messaging features offered by RCS, Google focuses on raising the bar in the messaging experience.
In this context, the Google Messages application offers a new option that allows users to choose the image quality when sharing photos. Thanks to this feature, which is also available in popular messaging applications such as WhatsApp, users will be able to send faster or with better quality by determining the quality level of the images. According to Android Authority’s report, this new option has started testing in the latest beta version of Google Messages and is expected to be available to all Android users soon.
With this new feature noticed in the latest beta version of Google Messages, users will be able to choose one of two different image quality options: “Optimize by Chat (HD)” and “Original Quality (HD+).” While the “Optimize by Chat” option aims to reduce data consumption and send faster sending by reducing the size of the image, “Original Quality” makes it possible to send the image in its original form. However, in this case, data usage and transmission time may increase. This feature of Google Messages offers a practical solution, especially for users who do not have high data speeds.
When sharing an image, a small logo reflecting the quality preference is added to the image. This innovation allows users to instantly realize what quality of image they are sending. This feature, which works similar to the HD and non-HD options that WhatsApp currently offers, can increase the popularity of Google Messages among users. However, the fact that WhatsApp automatically sends images in 12 MP resolution and processes them in 720p quality by default creates a different quality standard between the two applications.
Google Messages also aims for a better messaging experience between Android and iOS users
This innovation of Google Messages aims to provide a better messaging experience not only between Android users, but also between iOS users and Android users. Apple’s adoption of RCS technology is seen as a critical step for RCS to become a more widespread communication standard worldwide. The fact that Apple started testing RCS support in some countries with iOS 18 strengthens the possibility of providing a more compatible messaging experience, especially between Android and iOS users.
However, Apple has not yet enabled RCS on all operators. If RCS becomes more widely available on iOS, it could provide a smoother messaging process between both Android and iPhone users. In particular, the introduction of features such as multimedia sharing, faster transmission and read receipts with RCS will be an important step for the future of messaging applications.
The fact that Google Messages offers image quality options makes the advantages of RCS technology more evident and enriches the users’ experience. With these developments, RCS is expected to become increasingly popular among Android and iOS users. The steps taken by Google and other technology companies in this area may ensure that messaging standards work harmoniously on more platforms in the future.
