Google Messages gets in-app backup and restore feature

Google Messages has become the default messaging app on many Android phones and tablets. Samsung’s adoption of this application to increase the adoption of RCS (Rich Communication Services) technology enabled Google Messages to reach a wider user base. Now, the app is being updated with a new backup and restore feature that aims to increase the security of chats.

In the latest beta version of Google Messages (20241118_02_RC00), sequences of code related to a new “Backup and Restore” system were detected. This innovation was revealed by 9To5Google. Thanks to this system, users will be able to back up their messages whenever they want and easily restore their backed up messages when they install a new Android device.

The backup and restore option will be accessible directly from within the Google Messages app. Thus, users will not need to start the process by going to the settings menu. Restoring messages will happen automatically when you log in to your Google account.

In addition, the “Sync media only over Wi-Fi” option will also be available to prevent mobile data usage when backing up large files. This feature offers a useful solution for users who want to maintain their mobile data quota.

Google Messages aims for a more hands-on experience

This innovation allows users to store their messages more securely and manage backups effortlessly. While improving the messaging experience with such features, Google also aims to contribute to more widespread adoption of RCS.

It is not yet known when the new backup and restore feature will leave the beta phase and become active for all users. However, this feature is considered an important step for users who care about message security.
