Recently, Google has started to integrate artificial intelligence technologies more intensively into its popular applications. Following the Gemini-based innovations announced for Gmail and Chrome, a remarkable update has now been shared for Google Maps. The company aims to make the navigation experience more realistic and smarter with its new driving mode called “Immersive Navigation”. Thanks to this update, drivers will now be able to see their surroundings in three dimensions instead of the classic two-dimensional map view. Thus, the surrounding buildings, overpasses and road structures can be viewed in more detail while driving.
According to the information shared by Google, this new driving experience stands out as one of the most comprehensive changes made to the navigation system in about ten years. In the current system, the surroundings of the vehicle location were usually displayed on a flat map. However, in the new system, surrounding structures, road junctions and bridges are rendered with three-dimensional visuals. This approach is intended to help drivers find their way more easily, especially at complex intersections or multi-level road networks.
New Gemini-powered navigation experience for Google Maps
Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence models are behind the new three-dimensional navigation system. These models aim to reduce details that may distract while driving by analyzing which elements should be highlighted on the map. The visual model, created using data obtained from Street View images and aerial photographs, can automatically highlight critical elements on the road. For example; Elements such as pedestrian crossings, traffic lights or stop signs are displayed in a way that the driver can easily notice.
In addition, the voice navigation system has been updated to offer a more natural narration. While driving on the highway, drivers are provided with clearer directions instead of just giving road numbers. The system can use expressions that are closer to everyday speech, such as “take this exit and use the next one.” It is stated that such an approach can provide a more understandable navigation experience, especially for people driving in foreign countries.
Google Maps’ renewed navigation system will also share more information in alternative route suggestions. The app will now not only suggest a different route; In addition, it will also explain the advantages and disadvantages of the route in question. For example, details such as a suggested route may take longer but contain less traffic can be conveyed to the user before the drive begins. In addition, before reaching the destination, a preview will be presented via Street View and suitable areas to park can also be suggested.
In addition to all this, a new artificial intelligence interface is also added to Google Maps. This feature, called “Ask Maps”, can be used via a special icon in the application. Users can ask questions in natural language and receive answers through map data. For example, when a user searches for a place where he can charge his phone and drink coffee at the same time, the Gemini system can analyze the businesses on the map and offer appropriate suggestions.
On the other hand, the suggestions offered by the system can be personalized by taking into account users’ past searches and saved locations. In this way, saving recommended restaurants, making reservations or adding new locations can be done directly from the application. Google states that this approach makes it easier for users to find the information they need without reviewing numerous reviews.
The new “Immersive Navigation” driving experience is initially available in the United States. It is planned to gradually come to Android and iOS devices, as well as vehicles with CarPlay, Android Auto and Google built-in systems, in the coming months. The “Ask Maps” feature started to be offered to Android and iOS users in the USA and India; Desktop support is expected to be added in the future.
