Google continues to work to make the Android operating system more functional with each new update. The necessity of re-logging into each application when changing devices, which has been bothering Android users for a long time, becomes history with a new feature called Restore Credentials.
The Restore Credentials feature announced by Google makes it unnecessary for users to re-login to their applications and games when switching to a new phone. This feature significantly improves the user experience by making device replacement processes more practical.
How does Restore Credentials work? When you log in to an application, your Android device stores an authentication key called “Restore Key”. This key is kept encrypted on your device and synced to your Google account if cloud backup is turned on.
When you get a new phone or switch to another device, you are given the option to restore your data from cloud backup. During this process, applications and games are automatically downloaded to your device along with the relevant Restore Keys. When you open the application, the system detects the Restore Key, you log in to your account and your personal data is ready. Thus, there is no need to manually log in to each application.
However, for this feature to be fully functional, application and game developers need to add Restore Key support to their software.
With another innovation added to Android, Google makes the data restoration process for users more flexible. Thanks to the Android Switch application, the backup and restore process can now be started at any time.
Normally, when you buy a new phone, you need to restore your cloud backups by logging into your Google account during the device setup phase. When you skip this process, you may lose your chance to access your backed up data. However, thanks to the new feature, it becomes possible to start the restore process later.
For example, if you want to explore your new phone without installing your backups in the first place, you can skip this process and restore your data when you’re ready. This flexibility makes it easy for users to configure their devices according to their personal preferences.
Google makes it easier for those who frequently switch devices
These innovations by Google seem to provide great convenience, especially for users who change devices frequently and those who care about efficiency. In addition, it is expected that the overall user experience of the Android ecosystem will be taken to a further level as application developers integrate Restore Credentials support into their software.
