Google is testing a new shortcut for Gemini in the Chrome Android app

Google continues its work to integrate Gemini more comprehensively into the Chrome ecosystem. Following the Gemini features that started to be offered to desktop Chrome users in the UK, the company is now testing a new user interface in the Android version. According to the latest information, while Chrome’s bottom navigation bar is being redesigned, a special shortcut for Gemini is also added to this area. Thus, it is aimed to provide faster access to the artificial intelligence-supported assistant from within the browser.

Google’s Gemini integration has been gradually expanding in recent months. While the distribution process in the UK took place later than expected for regulatory reasons, it is stated that the company plans to deliver these features to iOS users next month. Despite this, developments on the Android side continue unabated and the new interface tested stands out as one of the most up-to-date examples of this.

Gemini experience expands in Chrome Android version

According to the information provided by Leopeva64, known for her posts on the X platform, a new Gemini button has started to appear in the Android version of Chrome. This button is placed between the Home icon and the tab button in the redesigned bottom navigation bar. However, the shortcut in question is currently only displayed to users who move the navigation bar to the bottom of the screen. The option to move the navigation bar to the bottom in Chrome is not new; Users have been able to choose this layout by long pressing the bar for about a year.

It would not be right to say that using Gemini on Chrome has not been completely possible until now. Users could ask questions about the open web page through the Gemini application on their phones. However, this method of use was limited to a single tab displayed on the screen. The most striking aspect of the new integration is that Gemini is aimed to be embedded deeper directly into Chrome and to be able to work with content in more than one open tab. This approach can be closer to the experience offered by the Gemini sidebar offered in desktop Chrome.

On the other hand, direct access to Gemini has been possible for a while in the iOS version of Chrome. However, in the current version, artificial intelligence can only work with the content in the active tab. For now, there is no information on the iOS side about a change similar to the new navigation bar on Android.

The new bottom navigation bar being tested isn’t just limited to the Gemini shortcut. Google also makes the recently added back button a part of this design. In the new layout, the back button is on the left side of the address bar, while Chrome’s three-dot menu button is on the right. Thus, the basic controls at the bottom of the browser are brought together in a more compact structure.

However, the new Gemini button does not appear to be widely available yet. Although Leopeva64 shows the feature in action, this shortcut is not yet displayed for many users using the Chrome 150 version with the same design. According to the shared information, Google has been testing this feature for about three months and it was initially expected to be available to Android users in the USA last month. However, it is not known whether this plan remains valid.

No official statement has been made by Google regarding the issue. For this reason, there is no definitive information about which countries and on what schedule the feature will be distributed. The company’s efforts to make Gemini more visible on different Chrome platforms continue. The new navigation bar design reflects the aim of bringing the browser experience to a more integrated structure while making it easier to access artificial intelligence features. When the feature will reach all users will depend on the information that Google will share in the future.
