Google Gemini can now scan Gmail and Drive content together

Google expanded the scope of the “Ask Gemini” feature in Drive, which it announced in March, and introduced Gmail support. Thus, users with appropriate Google AI and Workspace subscriptions will be able to search not only in files and folders stored in Drive, but also among emails in their Gmail accounts, with the help of Gemini. The new integration aims to make it easier to find information scattered across different Google services with a single AI query.

Previously, the Ask Gemini feature could answer users’ questions by working on documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and other files in Google Drive. With the addition of Gmail support, the system can now analyze e-mail contents. According to information shared by Google on its Workspace Updates blog, Gemini can thus evaluate a broader context of the user’s workflow and create its responses with information obtained from different sources, including emails, files and folders.

With queries prepared in natural language, users can ask which e-mail contains certain information or where correspondence regarding the approval process of a project is located. For example, when a request such as “Find the e-mail from which I received approval for the Jenkins project” is made, Gemini tries to detect the relevant correspondence. This approach can streamline business processes, especially for professionals who have to find specific information among a large number of emails and documents.

“Ask Gemini” brings together emails and Drive content in one place

To access the new feature, it is necessary to have a Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra subscription. In addition, Google Workspace Business and Enterprise customers can also benefit from the Gmail integration of the “Ask Gemini” feature. During use, users simply select Gmail from the resources section on the left and then click on the “Ask Gemini” button in the upper right corner. Afterwards, artificial intelligence-supported queries can be performed on e-mails and Drive content.

Google states that users will be able to conduct high-context and multi-step conversations. Accordingly, it is possible to narrow down the results or reveal certain details by asking additional questions after the first answer. In addition, Gemini’s ability to establish connections between e-mails, files and folders can contribute to easier finding of corporate information scattered across different applications.

In addition, Google has been steadily expanding AI features in its Workspace ecosystem lately. Google Gemini integrations offered in services such as Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Meet and Drive aim to accelerate users’ content creation, summarization and information access processes. The company’s latest updates continue its approach to place productive AI at the center of everyday work tools.

Gmail support for the “Ask Gemini” feature is now out of beta. Google announced that the feature is generally available for eligible Google AI subscribers and Workspace customers. Being able to evaluate e-mails and Drive content within the scope of the same query may offer a practical advantage, especially for users working with intense information traffic. However, the accuracy of the results obtained continues to depend on Gemini’s ability to correctly interpret the relevant content and accurately understand the user’s request.
