Google continues to deactivate extensions that are no longer supported in the Chrome browser. One of the most remarkable changes in this process was to remove the old version of the popular advertising blocking tool Ublock Origin. While the company puts the plug -in system into a new structure called Manifest V3, this transformation causes some advertising blocking extensions to lose their basic functions. Although Google argues that the new system offers better security and privacy, rival browser manufacturers such as Mozilla continue to support the manifest V2 by opposing such restrictions.
Chrome users, Reddit and X (formerly called twitter) shares on platforms, such as the browser’s old extensions automatically states, he says. Users are warned through a notification window that appears under the plug -ins tab in Chrome. According to this notification, the relevant extension is no longer supported and the user offers the option to remove or manage the extension.
Google began the transition to the Manifest V3 in October 2024. However, in recent weeks, this change has become widespread by affecting more users. A review by Bleeping Computer showed that the plug -ins on some employees’ devices has been automatically closed. Similarly, The Verge team observed that old extensions have been disabled on their devices.
This decision of Google covers not only Ublock Origin, but all extensions that are not updated to the Manifest V3. This means that other popular plug -ins that works and non -updated in the old system will be disabled. One of the alternatives for Ublock Origin users is Ublock Origin Lite. However, this new version offers more limited filtering options compared to the previous version, as the Manifest V3 is attached to advertising blocking policies.
Google did not only make a decision affecting Chrome users
Google’s transition to Manifest V3 directly affects not only Chrome users, but also other Chromium -based browsers such as Microsoft Edge and Brave. Microsoft Edge, Google’s decision to end the support of manifest V2, while Brave says that only “limited” support can offer.
On the other hand, Mozilla continues to offer a more flexible option to Firefox users. Mozilla has announced that it will support both the Manifest V2 and the Manifest V3 extension standards. This means that Ublock Origin users can switch to Firefox by switching to advertising blocking functionality.
Google’s transition to Manifest V3 is considered a major change in terms of advertising blocking and privacy -oriented extensions. How users will adapt to this new system and how developers will produce solutions in the face of the restrictions imposed by the Manifest V3 will become clearer in the coming period.
