Gemini support coming to millions of Android Go phones

Google brings the Gemini artificial intelligence assistant to the Android (Go Edition) platform developed for low-end smartphones. Announced by the company, Gemini Go is optimized to run on Android Go devices with at least 2 GB of RAM. Thus, phone users with limited storage space, memory and processing power will also be able to benefit from the productive artificial intelligence features offered by Gemini.

The Android Go version offers a watered-down Android experience designed specifically for entry-level devices. With Android 13 (Go Edition), Google set the minimum RAM requirement for these devices as 2 GB. For this reason, many Android Go phones currently in use meet the hardware conditions to support the new Gemini Go experience.

According to Google’s statement, Gemini Go was developed as a simplified version of Gemini that can run on devices with low storage capacity. The company states that this version will help users stay connected and complete their daily tasks more easily. Thus, the aim is to compromise device performance as little as possible while Android Go users access more advanced artificial intelligence features.

Gemini Go will replace Google Assistant Go, which has been used for a long time on Android Go devices. Users will be able to access Gemini Go via the Google Search application. A conversation with Gemini can be started by long pressing the home screen button on supported phones or via the power button on suitable models.

Gemini Go can handle a multitude of tasks in daily operations

According to the information shared by Google, Gemini Go offers more comprehensive functions than a basic voice assistant. Users will be able to initiate a phone call, send a text message or find out the time to reach a certain location with voice commands. In addition, operations such as searching for restaurants, finding electric vehicle charging stations, setting alarms and creating calendar events are also supported.

In addition, media playback control is among the capabilities offered by Gemini Go. Users can manage music or other media content with voice commands. In addition, Gemini Go also allows uploading documents, photos and other files to add additional context to conversations. This feature offers a remarkable usage scenario, especially for users who want to ask questions about certain content or extract information from documents.

Recently, Google continues to place Gemini at the center of the Android ecosystem. While the company previously made Gemini the default digital assistant on many Android phones, it continues to work on versions for different hardware levels. With the addition of Android Go support, the user base Gemini can reach is further expanded.

On the other hand, Gemini Go’s distribution will not reach all users at the same time. Google announced that the new feature is being rolled out gradually. Since these types of rollouts from the company can often take several weeks or even longer in some cases, it’s common for users with a qualifying Android Go device to not see the update right away. As the new version becomes widespread, artificial intelligence-supported experiences are expected to become more accessible on entry-segment Android phones.
