Google announced a new update for the Gemini artificial intelligence features integrated into the Docs application. According to the information shared by the company, Gemini will now be able to permanently store the instructions specified by users. Thus, the same commands will not have to be rewritten for each document or project. The feature can initially be used through the Gemini experience on the Google Docs side panel. It is stated that the update has started to be distributed as of today.
Thanks to the new system, users can tell Gemini to constantly apply certain spelling rules. For example, instructions such as “Always use bullet points”, “Add a short three-item section at the beginning of summaries” or “Use a concise and professional tone in all documents” can be defined on the side panel. Gemini then automatically applies these preferences to different documents. This approach aims to reduce repetitive transactions, especially for users who regularly create similar content.
According to the information provided by Google, all active permanent instructions can be viewed in the “sources” section under Gemini’s answers. Thus, users will be able to follow which instructions the artificial intelligence takes into account. In addition, there will be a list of previously created instructions in the Gemini customization area within Google Docs settings. Users will be able to edit or remove existing commands here.
Gemini in Google Docs offers a more personalized work environment
Persistent command support seems remarkable, especially for corporate users and content producers. People who routinely prepare reports, meeting summaries, or corporate documents often have to specify the same tone and formatting rules over and over again. While the new system reduces this need, it can make artificial intelligence-supported document production processes more consistent. Additionally, it may be easier for different teams to maintain common writing standards.
On the other hand, Google also mentions some limitations. According to the company’s statement, a maximum of 1000 active instructions can be stored for each Google account. It is stated that for now, this support is only valid in the USA and English. A clear date has not been shared regarding when other regions will be included in the scope of support. Despite this, the feature is expected to be opened to a wider user base in the future.
There are also certain restrictions on the access side of the new function. According to the information provided by Google, permanent instruction support is not offered to free Gemini users. The feature is initially activated for Google AI Plus subscribers and accounts using higher packages. This shows that Google continues to position advanced artificial intelligence features in paid subscription tiers.
Google has recently been trying to make Gemini integrations within Workspace applications more comprehensive. It is noteworthy that productive artificial intelligence tools offer more personalization options in services such as Gmail, Sheets and Google Docs. Persistent instruction support seems to be a continuation of this approach. How efficiently the feature will work in daily use will become clearer, especially in long-term document production processes.
