Emergency SOS on Android can be initiated by voice

Google may be preparing a way to initiate a hands-free emergency call on Android phones. Codes found by Android Authority in the Personal Security app point to the option to initiate an emergency SOS with a voice command. This function has not yet been opened to users and has not been announced by Google. The Personal Safety app already combines accident detection and emergency assistance functions. The new finding may offer a different entry way for situations where it is not possible to reach the phone’s power button.

Researchers detected texts regarding the hands-free start option and voice confirmation in the app version 2026.09.16.982745548. The texts contain phrases to say “yes” to continue the emergency SOS and “cancel” to stop the process. In addition, after saying the word “help” three times in the preparation animation, steps such as location control, emergency video recording and calling are shown. These are not live demonstrations of a working feature; development traces in the application file.

In which situation can voice emergency SOS come in handy?

According to today’s Pixel emergency SOS directive, the user can initiate emergency actions by pressing the power button at least five times. Depending on the setting, there is a touch and hold on the screen or a countdown phase. If configured, sending location to emergency contacts and video recording can also accompany this process; Their operation depends on the device and settings. If the voice method is completed, it may allow the person who cannot pick up the phone to initiate the assistance process. However, such a function requires a careful balance between accidental triggering and the inability to give consent in a truly emergency situation.

The phrases “yes” and “cancel” seen in the source suggest that Google is trying voice verification. However, it is not certain that the same commands will be used in the final version. It is also unknown whether the phone will listen when it is locked, which languages the command will recognize, and how it will work in a noisy environment. It would not be right to describe it as an emergency method that can be used in Türkiye, especially without explaining Turkish support.

Although some functions of the Personal Security app are specific to Pixel phones, the app can also be used on certain other Android devices. Therefore, it is unclear whether the possible voice SOS will be limited to Pixel models only. Android Authority also reminds us that Samsung uses its own emergency solutions. Differences between manufacturers will require additional checking of the support list when distribution begins.

For now, users looking for a new voice SOS setting on their phone will not be able to find this option. A feature in the application code may change during the testing process or may not be released at all. Therefore, in emergency preparation, it is a safer step to check the existing SOS shortcut and emergency contacts from the device settings. When Google makes an official announcement, the operating conditions and country support of the command will become clear.
