DJI has launched its new drone model, the DJI Neo. This ultralight, hands-free and budget-friendly drone offers everything you need to capture moments without compromising on quality and features. The DJI Neo stands out as the company’s first model of this kind and is designed to directly compete with Hover Air’s X1 Pro and X1 Pro Max models.
Unlike previous “flying camera” products, DJI aims to create a strong competitor this time. DJI Neo has many features that the X1 series lacks. However, users’ experiences are needed to see how the two products perform in practice.
DJI’s Creative Director Ferdinand Wolf said, “At DJI, we always examine daily camera use and create innovative solutions so people can take their photos and videos in the most convenient way.” He summarized the company’s goals with this product.
DJI Neo’s uncontrolled use feature
What sets DJI Neo apart from other models is that it is designed for completely hands-free use. DJI expects users to shoot, edit and share using only their phones with the Neo model. Users can lift the drone from their palms, shoot and return the drone by giving the command “Hey Fly” via the phone, the side button on the drone or voice commands.
DJI Neo also supports six basic automatic shooting modes, including dronie, circle, rocket, spotlight, helix, and boomerang. This allows users to take high-quality shots without the need for special knowledge. You can also use the drone in follow mode or direct it with simple commands to take photos and videos. For those who want more precise control, a joystick-like interface can be used via the DJI Fly app.
DJI states that it does not only make a “flying camera” but also offers its users all the advantages of drone technology. The Neo can be switched to full manual control with DJI’s RC-N3 controller, so it can be controlled like other DJI quadcopter drones.
What features does the DJI Neo come with?
The DJI Neo is also compatible with DJI’s third-generation FPV equipment. The Neo can perform many of the same maneuvers as the DJI Avata, making it DJI’s cheapest FPV drone option.
The prominent technical features of the drone are as follows:
- 135 grams weight
- 1/2 inch image sensor
- 12MP photo resolution
- 4K/30fps video shooting
- 22GB internal storage
- 18 minutes flight time
- DJI Mic 2 compatibility
- Level 4 wind resistance
- Automatic return to home feature
While the 22GB internal storage capacity should be enough for most users, some users may be criticized for the device not offering SD card support. DJI envisions users transferring their footage to their phones to edit and share.
DJI Neo is available for sale on DJI’s official website and Amazon. The drone’s starting price is $199, while the combined package, which includes two spare batteries and a two-way charging hub, is priced at $289. Both packages include the following accessories:
- Propeller guards
- Spare propellers
- Type C cable
- Screwdriver
- Propeller screws
The DJI Neo is the company’s most affordable drone, coming in at $100 less than the Mini 4K model. This price point makes it an attractive option for beginner pilots or those looking for a more affordable and easy-to-use drone.
