Codex now works directly with GitHub and Gmail

OpenAI added plugin support to the Codex application and directly accelerates the integration process with external services. Users can set up workflows in a short time by connecting services such as GitHub, Gmail and Cloudflare with a single click.

The new system brings together the “skill” components that define workflows, application integrations and MCP servers in a single package. In this way, processes that previously required manual installation can be quickly installed via pre-prepared packages.

However, the Plugin tab added to Codex directs the user directly to a library and makes it easier to find suitable packages by searching. Services such as GitHub, Gmail, Box, Cloudflare and Vercel are readily available in this library.

On the other hand, this system does not technically offer completely new capabilities, but it seriously simplifies access to existing features. Advanced users could previously install similar integrations manually.

Codex plugin system combines workflows in a single package

Plugin packages bundle multiple components into a single installation and make it possible to create standard usage within the team. This eliminates the need to re-establish the same settings for different users.

At this point, the system offers a time-saving method, especially in team work, and significantly shortens the installation process. Installed packages can be easily shared within the organization.

In addition, OpenAI states that the plugin library will expand over time and third-party developers may add new packages. This approach expands the scope of use of Codex.

On the competitive side, Claude Code and Gemini CLI have previously introduced similar systems. In particular, Claude Code’s plugin library quickly became widespread among developers.

In addition, when developer preferences are examined, it is seen that the number of Claude Code users is higher than Codex. With this step, OpenAI aims to reach a wider user base.

On the other hand, the fact that plugins are not limited to coding only enables Codex to open up to different usage scenarios. Connections with external services create new forms of use in information processing and productivity.

With this development, OpenAI is taking a step parallel to the comprehensive productivity approach that companies such as Anthropic and Google are advancing.
